2015 Dodge Eco-Diesel vs Ford 2.7 EcoBoost

This is a very interesting test, and one that should answer a lot of questions.

From what I heard from my local Ford girl is that the Ford 2.7L Ecoboost engine is a dog of a motor and will use just as much gas as a bigger motor in real world use. Once those turbos kick in, the motor needs to throw more fuel into the mix to avoid running lean, thus your fuel economy takes a big hit. As it's such a small motor, you're into the turbos a lot.

Now turbos and modern diesels........The problem with 07+ diesels, even with big trucks is the complexcity of the EGR systems, urea injection, sensors and particulate filters. My boss had a 2010 Jetta diesel that he bought his wife for her commute to work. I suggested to him to change the oil at twice the rate that VW recommended, but he elected to stay with VW's 15,000km service intervals. At 4 years and just over 200,000 kms the bits of metal suspended in the oil had finally worn through the turbos main shaft. The shaft broke allowing the turbo wheels to impact the housings and allowed the oil that was supposed to lubricate the turbo to travel down the exhaust, through the catalytic converters and down to the particulate filters. The resulting bill was for $7,000.00 in parts only, as the turbo, catylitic converter and particulate filters ($4,500.00 for the filters alone) were
trashed. I won't even go into his diesel Touareg.

Before you buy a diesel anything I strongly suggest people ask some serious questions as to replacement parts and service cost associated with the diesel. Then you have to weigh the increased costs of no only service costs but fuel costs to decide if a diesel is worth it.

If you can, stay away from turbo anything. If you want turbos for christs sake make sure you change your oil religiously and use a great quality synthetic oil. Also make sure the engine is completely warm BEFORE placing the motor under heavy load and make sure turbo has a chance to wind down BEFORE shutting motor off.

Cheers
Tony

If only it had been a fair fight. A lighter truck against a heavier truck. Mhem. Been down the strip enough times to know what happens when you put an LS1 in a Miata and run it against a Camaro.

Drag racing performance is VERY IMPORTANT in pickup trucks.

It would be more meaningful on this forum to see a towing comparison between those two.

If you listened to him at the end of the video, he said their next test with those 2 trucks was a towing test. Stay tuned. As far as heavier vs lighter, that's the name of the game. Same situation in any gas engine vs a diesel, engine weight and initial cost comparison. It all has a play in one's decisions.

Very impressive performance by the Ford! Wow! The 0-60 time is so critical to what makes a great truck. For some people anyway.
The problem with the Ford is, it's a Ford.

The Dodge will get better mpgs solo and towing but the Ford will have better payload. Remember the old Mercedes 240d, that was slow 0-60 times.

Yes, sir!! Ha
Comparison tests don't tell much of anything. Check the braking distance and there ends anything of importance past fuel burn to do the same work.

Are you kidding me?

Hi, I find it amazing that if it wasn't for turbos, Diesels would be total slugs; Remember those days of diesels without turbos??????? Do any of you remember being stuck behind a Mercedes Benz Diesel car that was slower than a fully loaded Volkswagon Micro-bus???? Now that turbos on gas engines, are boosting horsepower, increasing low end torque, and improving fuel mileage, all of a sudden turbos are a bad thing. WOW, how hypocritical can we be? Of coarse when the pedal is to the metal, while pulling a heavy load, or empty, the fuel is going to flow.

It was OK for a Sprinter to have a tiny turbo charged diesel, [and the new Dodge 1500] but for Ford to do the same thing with a tiny gas engine, OMG how horrible.

Comparison tests will never be equal; Ford was faster, Dodge was better on MPG. Etc, Etc, Etc.

The fact is, Diesels are what they are, and gas engines are what they are. A gasoline engine in a lighter vehicle will always be faster than a Diesel engine. That's what they do.

Bob, I'd bet your new Ecoboost Ford 1/2 ton truck would outrun my 9,000lb 3/4 ton Diesel Ram in a drag race. So what! That's not why I have the thing. If I wanted to drag race, I'd buy a Camaro or a Mustang.

Hook 10,000lbs of trailer behind that Ecoboost (after all it's rated for it), and then we'll have a race, and also compare fuel economy doing it. THAT's why I have the truck I have.

Getting down off the soap box now............

It's not just MPG, it's fuel cost per mile. Since diesel (plus urea/def?) costs much more than regular gasoline.

And then there's regular maintenance costs. Do those count too?

Oh, and the purchase premium too, forgot about that one.

There's an old saying that rings true here, "you get what you pay for" when it comes to tow vehicles.

If you haven't towed a large trailer with first a gas rig, and then a Diesel rig, you need to go do it so you will be educated.

I never have said driving a Diesel is cheaper, actually I've said the contrary, but for me it's worth it. And by the way, my Diesel does not use DEF.

DEF is cheap if you buy it at the truck stop pump. $2.70 gallon. I filled my DEF tank for $21. I get 1,000 MPG from DEF. Cost per mile for DEF is a moot point.

I'll trade 0-60 time for 15MPG towing my Airstream any day.

IMHO the new 2.7l Ecoboost is not going to be a great tow rig for most people, but will be a good powerplant for the huge group of pickup buyers here in Texas who drive their truck to the office and occasionally toss a bicycle or a piece of furniture in the bed but rarely do anything more "trucky" than that. Pulling much of a trailer (either heavy or large frontal area or both) it'll probably do OK up to a point but be in boost all the time and return no better mileage than the 3.5l Ecoboost while being down on power compared to the bigger Ecoboost engine.

Let's face it, Ford is selling to a way bigger market than we constitute, so engines like the 2.7l Ecoboost and the naturally-aspirated 3.5l V6 satisfy other segments of that bigger market.

a lot of owners in the Ford forums say they are getting 7.5-9.5mpg pulling 6000 lb. box campers at 55-65mph and get 18-22mpg not towing
