Wow. My OEM pump finally gave way at 215k. But there’s no wiring as pictured on my ‘04. The other fear is about other wiring anywhere the belt might contact and rip. And there’s plenty of that. My OEM belt just slipped off (huh, think that tensioner might be worn out, ha).

Sure was fun getting home with no alternator, brakes or steering. The chances of fire are low, I’d guess, but losing the above is definitely bad. I was glad not to have bent or broken the steering wheel after it was over. That was quite enough redneckin’ for the foreseeable future.

Definitely the easiest to replace water pump in all Creation. But that belt is another story.

Yup gotta have the secret handshake instructions and watch out for the fan clutch wiring.

But at least you don't have to take the cab off to do it.

The new pump is of the old design...warranty will replace it with new design..why did you pay for belt and antifreeze? warranty should have covered that ..the pump seized up breaking the belt.....that is covered here...in billings

Spoke w/MOPAR customer service & local dealer on T51 recall. No good answers at this time other than the issue is being worked on. From what I have read (many threads/forums) if the water pump fails, more than likely around 40k and above. It appears at issue is lack of cooling of the bearing. This would explain "freeze up" of the bearing. Any bearing is going to fail w/o appropriate cooling or lubrication. I find it hard to believe Cummins would use a lesser cost bearing just to save a few pennies. Not Cummins way. It appears design is the problem. More than likely redesign has taken place. However 500k new water pumps just do not show up over night. Recalls are common on all makes of vehicles. Yes you can have yours replaced and MOPAR will reimburse, if/should it fail before new pumps are out MOPAR will replace w/same, and when new pumps come out MOPAR will replace w/new pump on T51 recall. For us we have 14k on our 2016, most likely we will wait for new pump, yes we will still drive/tow.

Safe travels

Over on the Turbo Diesel Register forum there is a post saying the new pump design has been released. Remains to be seen how long before 500,000 pumps can be manufactured.

Al,

This is the link to the supplier referenced on TDR.

Geno's supplies parts and hosts TDR.

For those unaware updated water pumps are available at dealerships - mine is being done tomorrow.

We're heading out on a long trip at the end of this month. Since FCA couldn't give me any guidance as to when they would have the parts, and I didn't want to take the chance of a failure while on the road, I bought the new pump from Geno's and handed it to my dealer for installation. They wouldn't submit it to FCA as a warranty claim so I had to pay for the install, but after I got it back I sent both invoices to FCA and three weeks later I got a check in the mail.

My vehicle health report still shows the outstanding recall, so I assume they won't mark it as done until they do it with their own parts. That won't happen until next time it needs to go in for other work.

I ordered the pump from Geno’s about three weeks ago. It was backordered, but arrived a few days ago. I’ve only got 60,000 on the truck, but figured I’d have the serpentine belt replaced since they had to loosen the old one. Took the truck to the dealer yesterday. They have 600 trucks that need the new pumps. They are receiving 12 pumps from Mopar in a haphazard schedule. I don’t see how this recall will ever get done at that rate. I’m just glad to have the new one installed. I left the truck there, but they said it’s a 3 hour job.

It’s a fifteen minute job. Far easier than the ubiquitous small block Chevy of old.

Forgot to say, FCA Canada are sending me a check for my first pump failure in December 2016 which broke the serpentine belt and contaminated the coolant. The service cost $300. Pump was warranty.

Montana dealers seem to think maybe May? They say no parts, where was yours done?

Thanks for your update. The MT dealer here said if I had a local shop do the replace, be sure they mark it as Failed on the invoice, or I may not get a reimbursement. Any ideas?

Mine was in Ohio - interestingly enough they inspected it and said it didn’t need replaced. They said it had a weep hole.....

My understanding from all the reading I’ve done is that they all have a weep hole - bad and good pumps. Supposedly the good pumps have a vent hole at about 11:00. I had already received my new pump I had ordered from genos garage online. I’ll probably replace it on my own for peace of mind.

I had my RAM dealer do the replacement with the Geno's part. They did not mark the invoice as Failed. That said, I had a relationship with the executive referrals office at FCA after my Jeep's EcoDiesel engine failed last autumn, and they eventually got my case after I got no satisfaction from FCA Customer Service or the dealer. I sent my reimbursement request to that person and it was handled by them. If you go the normal route, things may be different.

The bad ones have no weep hole......new ones have weep hole at 9:30 position looking from the front...on the flat right behind the back side of the pulley edge..

From what I have read, yes to weep hole, however also vent ribs too. Old/failed style flat and no vent ribs.

Best regards and safe travels
