2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (much improved!)

A few years back Trailer Life mag did a road test of the V8 Grand towing a 25' Sportsman TT and they raved about how it towed and handled.

I don't have much interest in NA SUV's but found the article in our local paper interesting.

Some of the highlights of the article were.....
...2011 model uses Mercedes platform from the ML350
...better off roading with a smoother asphalt ride
...it has the backbone of a body that's considerably stiffer than the previous Grand Cheerokee, rigidity being integral both to off roading competence and better cornering on the paved roads where most SUV's spend their lives.
...Also new is independent suspension on all 4 corners
....considerably longer wheelbase gives it a smoother ride
....it can do almost anything off road a Wrangler can do but on the street it rides and drives like a 300M sedan
V6 or Hemi all at a cost less than the previous model.

Sounds like the Grand was a nice vehicle but through evolution gets better and better.

Wonder what the tow rating is? Problem is all these suv start to look the same. Just like the sedans. Hard to tell a bmw from a honda or toyota these days. No style left.

5000 with the V6, 7400 for a rear-drive-model/7200 for a 4x4 with the Hemi V8.

Agree, same with the pick ups. We know with regards to styling that the auto makers all copy each other and follow the "trend of the day".

Anyway I take my hat off to Chrysler for raising the bar with with the new Grand. High end import specs/performance at a domestic price.

My wife drives our 2002 model (2nd generation) with the high output 4.7. This is really a nice vehicle in my book.
I have driven a 2005 model (3rd generation) and it definitely has better road manners than the 2002.
I really like the looks of the 2011 version - lots of curb appeal. Too bad they don't offer the diesel option anymore. Too bad they have to use the independent suspension. While it is better for on the road there are compromises for going off road with less ground clearance and articulation.
Hopefully it will be a winner for the company, they certainly need it if they are going to survive.
On a side note why did Chrysler separate the Dodge nameplate and now only have Ram trucks? This I do not understand unless they are going to spin off the truck line.

I had not seen that, but I do know it may be a hedge against the company ultimately failing, if they seperate out the truck that sell well from thier cars that arent so great, it may be a survival strategy.

Hi, it seems like a great improvement and looks good too, but I thought Mercedes and Chrysler were divorced.

For sure Mercedes broke of the relationship. Guessing that a commitment was made as far as this jeep was concerned and Mercedes is abiding by the deal. A good question though. Anyone know for sure?

According to Allpar the chassis uses the next generation ML chassis witch was a joint effort by Chrysler and Mercedes.

It has more to do with their website layout than anything. Ram trucks are still Dodges. They are still sold alongside their automobile counterparts at Dodge dealerships just like they have always been.
