Yes, F250-F550 Superduties with 6.7L Diesel. I don't think the gasers had the hard shifting issue. When they did the 400HP/800TQ upgrade they adjusted the shift points, and now again with TSB 11-4-21. They didn't get it perfect at first, but they sure are working hard to get there.

I agree - I'd be extremely pleased with that sort of performance. I average 12 mpg towing and 15 commuting with my '08.

I'll mention that if you're in search of better mileage, your best approach is to slow down:

Ignoring rolling resistance and other parasitic loads, power required to move varies as the cube of the air speed. Say you're getting 10 mpg @ 70.... you'd get something like 13.6 mpg at 60 mph - and around 19 mpg at 50 mph.

The latter figure is likely a couple of mpg too high, since we're ignoring rolling resistance, air conditioner, etc.... but it certainly points out that you can cut your fuel costs easily by 50% if you're currently bombing along at the speed of car traffic.

What this points out, of course, is that mileage measurements that don't include time and distance made good are going to be nice anecdotes, but aren't useful for comparison purposes.

I have 250 miles on my 2011 F250 diesel. Need to put a few more miles on (500 miles recomended) before hooking up my 28' Airstream. So far, things look great can't say that for my local dealer. (All Star in Denham Springs, LA.) I'm looking forward to taking the AS and the F250 where ever I want. Also, thinking about adding an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed. Any thought about this will be a help. Love the forum, I have learned so much from you guys and gals.

I should have taken the advice of the OP. But, after having some issues with the Dodge and the Dodge dealership, i went and test drove a new Ford.

It's mine now, and I am in love.

I did manage to keep my auxillary fuel tank in the deal. I've already looked underneath. and I don't see any issues with doing the installation. And, since there's only 26 gallons on the main tank the auxillary will be added very soon.

I'll get some soon, promise. We pulled it home Saturday afternoon, then I got right on fixing a few minor issues (marker light that was bad, emergency brake cable needed to be remade), then Sunday I flew to San Antonio for work, so I just haven't had much time. Erica took a few pictures but she's been busy cleaning it and getting some stuff we need in it for the first trip Thursday (I get back Wed afternoon and have to take the trailer for inspection Thursday morning). We'll get pics, just not sure when!

Update On Orginal Post

It's been 14 months since I originally posted this and about 14,000 miles and so a brief update.

We upgraded to a 2010 Flying Cloud 30 last year and have towed about 6,000 miles with our 2011 Ford F250 Diesel (13.1 avg MPG). In all conditions and grades this truck remains a rock solid tow vehicle with no service issues other than the computer prompted two oil changes.

We we left Palm Springs July 3rd this year the temp was 116º. We towed uphill into the wind over the pass into LA and then the grape vine at 98º. We could drive any speed we chose and the temp gauge never budged. Down the other side and up and down the Shasta area I simply love this truck which holds any speed up or down grade!

Just ordered the Titan 50 gallon replacement tank to increase our range. I'm having Robberson Ford in Bend install it for me next week and look forward to being able to be choosy in picking our fuel stops.

On a sad note, while we have loved our Airstream's we just ordered a new Thor Redwood 38FT Fiver from George Sutton. My wife and I and our two cats want some additional room to roam while working out of our TT for two months at a time, so it is on to the next adventure. Thanks for everyone in the forums and keep the shiny side up! We hope we are please with the new Redwood as our Airstreams.

With the new tank size, there is a great app on the iPhone called iGasUp, which will probably pay for itself the first time you tank up.

We've got the standard tank and have had no problems. We are just now two months into our Alaska adventure. Fuel is readily available everywhere. Our rule is to fill up whenever we have less than 1/2 tank. We carry 10 gallons in two containers in the bed and have not had to touch them yet. Then, once we reached scenic country, we don't usually do more than 120 - 150 miles per day. That means less than half a tank per day (getting 13+mpg in the mountains).

It looks like you are having a great trip. We are planning a similar trip in a couple years when we get retired. We have a 2007 F250SD and are looking to get a new 2011 or 2012.

What axle ratio does your truck have?

May I ask what the consumption rate is for the DEF / urea as required by EPA? How does that skew the cost per mile. We got differing "facts" when we considered both the Ford and GM diesels.
