2010 2500 suburban Excella 30 1998 can I pull it?
My wife and I are about to take the plunge we found an Excella 30 1998 7100# UVW. Our vehicle is a 2010 Suburban 4x4 2500 with 3.42 rear end and the new 6 speed Our current trailer is 5300# fiberglass and we don't even feel it.
How well will my vehicle pull this trailer? I know the specs say you can but they said I could tow the 5300# trailer with a half ton,not so much, hence the new truck.
Replies appreciated we are looking forward to being Airstreamers!

I'll bet it's fine. Upgrade to a sway-eliminating hitch (Pro Pride, etc) and convert the trailer to disc brakes and maybe upgrade trailer to 16" wheels with MICHELIN LTX tires. LED exterior lamps. Etc.
Good luck

I haven't checked out GM's new trucks with the 6 spd trans. That rear end ratio seems too low. I would expect a higher number than the 4.10 that is in my 6 liter with the 4spd trans?
That trailer will go over the road at 8000lbs with hitch and gear.

Your Current TV will do just fine. I'd look in the Fort Wayne ,Indianapolis SouthBend. Craigslist and see if you can find a Reese Dual Cam Straightline Hitch. That will do the trick. Im old school so I dont believe in spending huge sums of money on a hitch when the old REESE will do the job. I think I gave about 200 bucks for mine 4 or 5 yrs ago.
GOOD LUCK and Welcome to Airforums

You have more TV capacity than your indicated trailer choice requires. That particular TV (with the proper hitch & functioning trailer brakes) opens your trailer choice to almost any airstream under 9600 GWR. The Reese hitch comment is definitely on target.

Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the replies we are heading out for a little road trip to see our possibly "new to us" trailer.
Driving to look at a 28 and a 30 foot 1998 excellas within 50 miles of one another, only 2 hours from me. I'll be looking for a good hitch.

Hi and welcome. The rear end of 3.42 seems low, but then again you do have the six speed tranny. My Tundra has a 4.3 rear end with a six speed. Fourth gear is one to one. Both 5th and 6th gears are overdrives. I guess it will depend on what your gear ratios are. My Tundra turns only 1600 rpm at 60 mph. What is your engine speed at 60?
Even though you have a 3/4 ton Sub, I would be curious to know the rear GAWR and the vehicle GVWR. You can't just look at the max trailer weight. You don't want to buy an AS that will have you exceeding the rear axle GAWR or the GVWR.
Happy searching for the right Airstream.

3.42 is fine. The 6 speeds allow for 2 overdrives and allows for 1st -3rd to be lower gears than with the old 4 speeds. You'll find that you'll be in 5th gear most of the time on the highway (tow/haul mode will lock out 6th gear and raise your shift points, in addition to using different calibrations for Stabilitrac, active suspension, if equipped, and roll over mitigation)
You'll turn about 1700 RPM in 6th and about 2000 RPM in 5th. I'm not sure what the loaded weight of your trailer is, but you really don't need to use tow/haul until your trailer weight is 75% of the truck's rated trailer capacity. Mileage will be SLIGHTLY better without tow/haul on, particularly in city traffic. I really don't like tow/haul in town (I have a light foot when trailering), but I do like it on the highway. It seems to anticipated downshifting on hills better, especially with cruise control on. More pleasent shifting also. It's rare that you'll ever downshift to 3rd in rolling/moderate hill situations.

I believe your tow ratings are 9300 for 4WD and 9600 for 2WD (with HD trailering package). Can't seem to lay my hands on GAWR, GCWR, or GVWR ratings right now. Do you have HD trailering package?

OK, found the spcs. First, I think you have a 3.73 rear end. I didn't find any other available for 2010 in 3/4 ton. All weights are for base vehicle, you must accomodate for all optional equipement.
2WD 4WD
GVWR 8600 8600
GAWR Front 4500 4500
GAWR Rear 6000 6000
Payload 2429 2162
GCWR 16000 16000
Max Trailer 9600 9300

I found similar numbers. I agree it looks like the 2500 has the 3.73 re. The payload of 2162 looks like it is on the low side for a 3/4 ton vehicle, so he may not be able to take the cast iron kitchen sink with him, but he should be in pretty good shape. My 1/2 ton Tundra has a payload of only 1,680 lbs, so he can at least carry another 500 lbs more than I can.

Yeah, Suburbans have a lot of weighty suff in them as opposed to a 3/4 pickup, like a lot more glass, seats, carpet, front and rear heat and A/C....etc. All that subtracts from available loading weights.

Glad to hear it's a 3.73. The trans -- no matter the number of gears -- always benefits near GCWR with a lower gear set.

Thanks, we are taking the plunge!
Thank you all so much, put a deposit on our "new" trailer today gonna sleep on the deal.
Yes the Suburban has 3:73 gears, my half ton had 3:42. It was a great driver but not so much as a TV.
Hopefully it will tow new trailer like a dream trailer comes with a cam sway system.
