2008 GMC Yukon (About to be new guy)

We have a 2008 GMC Yukon 5.3 with 3.73 gear and the towing package, trans cooler, tow mode, etc. GMC website spec's it at 8200 lb towing capacity, but we want real world information.
We're looking at a 2010 25' AS and want to make sure we're going to be good to go, even in the mountains. I'll do whatever upgrades neccessary to our truck to help it out.

I hope we're ok because we are very excited about being part of the Airstream family.

As a new 'streamer myself, I'll say welcome to the forum. You will find plenty of good info and opinion on tow vehicles here. Start out by going to the Forum Listings and scroll down to the Tow Vehicle and Hitch sections. If you don't find enough there to keep you up all night, try the search feature. You will find tons of discussion on what constitutes a good, appropriate, safe tow vehicle and some currently active threads. Start reading!

As long as you don't plan on going with a longer AS any time soon, (happens more often than you might think), you should be ok.

A properly set-up hitch is very important for having a successful towing experience. There are plenty of threads here on the subject,trailer hitch - Google Search

I had an '07 GMC truck with the same engine and gear ratio as you have and it was OK. If your '08 has the new six speed trans, even better. However, you will be going slower in the mountains...just a fact, so have patience.

I have an '01 that I bumped up in HP a little bit and we would motor past everyone on all but the steepest Rocky Mountain passes with a fully loaded 25' Safari. You '08 has more juice than the '01, so you should be great. In anticipation of the next A/S we just bought a new Yukon Denali...403HP should about do it for us.

You mentioned bumping up the HP a little bit. You know, I've considered that as well and think it might be a doable option without going to crazy. I've even considered upgrading the brakes in some way as well. We would have purchased a truck or a 2500 Suburban but I'm still a working stiff and my office and customers are in Chicago, not large vehicle friendly.

In today's world one of the most cost effective ways to improve performance/drive-ability is through the PCM (powertrain control module).

Been using THIS on the 06 8.1 Burp since new.

Gives you many parameters that you can program to your requirements. Plus the ability to read service engine soon fault codes, adjust transmission shift points, tire size, cooling fan settings etc. Towing mode and ECO mode come in handy also.

Give them a call and check on availability for your vehicle.
