2008 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd MaxVortex

I think we are ready to buy. Our question.......
If anyone has one of these here, please tell us everything about it. Do you think it has enough power, is stable, we have never towed with a truck before.
I am under its tow rating, so that is OK.
Any problems with it? Any thing I should be aware of? To look for?
Thanks in advance

Hi subfan1. Two things might help.
  • A MaxVortex is what? What's the displacement?
  • Please put your Airstream model in your profile. Click on 'User CP' (control panel) at the upper left when you're logged in to Forums and select 'Edit Profile.'
Tow capacity is a very inexact number. The truck's payload (or load capacity) is more telling -- what is the combination of all weights put on the truck (people, gas, truck cap?, gear in the box, trailer tongue weight)? If you stay within the TV's load capacity I'll almost guarantee that you'll be well under tow capacity. Definitely buy with a tow package -- receiver (though GM has had problems with those), tranny cooler & 7-pin umbilical plug on the back bumper.

Sheer muscle will tow anything. The art comes when a trailer is right on the margin of transitioning to needing a larger tow vehicle.

You haven't provided us enough info to help you. What do you plan to pull with this new truck?

I have towed my 25 Trade Wind, 1976 and my 27' Overlanders with my Sierra 5.3 V8, no problem at all. the 27' on the hills is a bit more of a challenge.
If that helps...
What are you looking to tow?

08 sierra vortex max, 6L

Have towed our our 2007 25 FB international about 12,000 miles. With an equalizer stability is excellent. Plenty of power. The 4 speed trans is ok, allison 6 speed would be preferable but not availble last year when we bought ours.
What are you towing?

Thanks for your replys. I have a 232TS Komfort travel trailer. Currently for sale. I don't know if a truck is right for us though?
Thanks again everyone.
Oh, the vortech engine on the 07 and 08 1/2 tons are 6 liter in size.

I have an '07 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 liter engine and towing package, and have no problems towing our 1975 23' Safari. I would think the only problem you might have with the 6 liter is feeding it, as I have heard reports they use a substantial amount more fuel than the 5.3 liter engine.

I have both a 5.3 and a 6.0. The 5.3 is in our 2004 Tahoe (2wd), and the 6.0 is in our 2005 Yukon XL 2500 (4wd Quadrasteer). While not towing the 5.3 gets 16/17 mpg, and 6.0 gets 13/14 mpg. These figures are for combined city/highway driving. The figures while towing Lucy (2005 25FB) are closer. The 5.3 gets 11 mpg and the 6.0 get 10 mpg. The 6.0 does a great job at towing the Airstream. The 5.3 can barely handle the 7500# Airstream.

Chevy Silverado 6.0 Max

I have the Silverado 6.0 max crew cab and tow a 25 1986 Soveriegn. I use a Dual Cam hitch. The truck tows our 25 just fine and is very stable. I get 10.5 towing and 19 highway without.

I choose the Silverado Max because I wanted the 6.0 and side curtain airbags. It is also the LTZ and quite comfortable to drive. The only thing I don't like is that I couldn't find a MAX with 17 or 18 inch wheels. They all had the "upgraded" 20" wheels. I think this effects the torque.

I also looked at the 2500 but could not find one with the airbags for my kids.

I did NOT consider the regular 2007 1500 because it does not come with disk brakes in the rear. I think that is an important safety feature which both Ford and Dodge 1/2 tons have.

Moosetags,
It's the overall heigth or diameter of the tire difference that effects the torque rather than the diameter of the rim. If the 20" rim has a tire on it that is taller than a 17" or 18" rim with a slightly shorter (diameter) tire then you would be correct. I also hear that the 20" rims with corresponding tires ride a little rougher but couldn't attest to that.

Do you have the 4.10 or 3.73 rear end gear ratio? The 4.10 is really sweet with the 6.0 because that engine loves to rev.

Sorry I didn't check back

I am sorry I didn't follow up on this thread since a fellow sovereign'r asked me a question.

I have the 3.73 but I am seriously considering the 4.10. Do you have any suggestions?

My tires are actually low profile but I will switch those out for LT's when I have to replace them.
