2008 Ford Expedition towing capacity.

Hi, everyone. We currently tow a small boat (~3,500 lbs trailer+boat) and we are looking to upsize (to ~6,000 lbs trailer+boat).

We bought a 2008 Ford Expedition XLT last summer. We told the dealer that our primary concern was towing capacity so they showed us trucks with the heavy duty towing package. I recently learned that our rear axle is not 3.73 (it is 3.31?). Based on Ford's website (last summer when we bought this truck) it said that heavy duty package required the 3.73 axle so I never even knew to look for this. Anyway...

Does anyone know what the towing capacity is for a 2008 Expedition 4x4 with the heavy duty towing package but a 3.31 rear axle?

Thank you!
Jeff

If no one relies to your question here then take it to the dealer and have them run the VIN number and find out what you have in terms of options. You will know if it has the HD tow package. It may not have been an option on the 3:31 rear end.
My Tahoe has the 3:73 gears and HD tow package only available with the 3:73
Good luck

Hi, Subfan1. Thank you for the reply. I do know that our truck has the HD tow option. We bought the truck new and it is listed as one of the options.

Also, I climbed under the truck and the 331 ratio is stamped on the rear axle.

Last, I recently read articles saying that the 3.73 axle was not an automatic upgrade with the HD tow package for 2008 models.

As such, we are trying to determine what the "true" towing capacity is for our configuation.

Best regards.

Welcome to the forums. I am not a mechanic nor am I mechanically inclined, but my wife has a 2007 Expedition regular length and it has a 9,400 LBS tow capacity, but I don't know the rear-end ratio. There is a member here on the forums that is retired Ford Service Person...I'm not sure of exactly what he did before retiring last year. You might go to the blue bar above and go to the member list and go to the "R's" and find Robertsunrus" and send him a private message and ask him if he knows the tow limit for your Expedition.

I would think that a 6000# package is doable with the XLT even with the 331 rear end ratio. Usually a boat is not towed that far, so the issue would not be as crucial as with a 6000# travel trailer. Also, boat trailers generally have less tongue weight that a TT of the same weight.

The Ford web site for the current (2009) models shows the tow capacity the same for 3.31 or 3.73. 4x2=9200 and 4x4=9000. Interesting that the gear ratio makes no difference.

2008 Expedition 4X2 or 4X4 with 3.31 axle ratio has a towing capacity of 6000#'s
If it is a Expedition EL (two or four wheel drive) then it requires a 3.73 for the same 6000 # tow rating

The tow package will get you to 9000 #'s on 4X2 and 8750 on 4X4.
Not sure what is in that specific tow package.

I checked the owner's manual on my wife's Expedition this afternoon. There was no distinction between a 3.31 or a 3.73 rear end. The chart in the manual says the reg. length 5.4L with the tow package with 2X4 has a tow limit of 9,200 and the 4X4 has a tow limit of 9,000. The EL has limits of 9,000 and 8,750 respectively.

Hi, these are the same numbers I came up with.

Because you have a 6 speed automatic the 3.31:1 ratio is fine and actually preferable to a 3.73. With the 3.73 ratio the first gear ratio is too low to be of much use so the 3.31 gives you better economy in 6th gear with no loss in towing capabiltiy.
