2008 Expedition EL, why class III hitch?

Was at my local Ford deal for LOF service and always tour the lot Nice 2008 Expeditions (for $51,000) but only have class III hitches.

My 2003 has a class IV hitch; why do the new ones only have class III hitches?

Interesting...
The max tow capacity of an 08 Expedition / EL with a standard tow package is only 6000 pounds. That is still 1000 pounds more then a Class 3 is rated to handle. The optional HD tow package can handle around 9000 pounds. They mush have a Class 4...

I just bought a new 2008 Expedition (not the EL). The only way to get the Class IV hitch is to order the Tow Package. This comes with the 7 pin connector (otherewise it only comes with the 4 pin) and the complete wiring to hook up a brake controller. I ordered the Tow Package, bought the pigtail connector for my Prodigy brake controller and had it hooked up in about 10 minutes. In the Expedition (4x4) it also allows for 9,000 lb. tow capacity.

Thanks fellows; I would have asked a salesman but did not want to raise his/her blood pressure because of my showing interest or my wife's.....same reason.

They also had a nice V8 2008 Mustang convertible for $35,000. It certainly is cute but then no trailer hitch at all.

If you would have asked the salesman he would have said that the Mustang could tow a Airstream with no problems.

Im looking at a 2008 Expedition to replace my 1998 model. Im towing a 6000 lb Airstream 25' Ocean Breeze with a weight distributing hitch. My current Expo has the load leveling suspension and a 3.73 rear end. The new Expo Im looking at has the tow package but has the 3.31 rear end and does not have the load leveling suspension. On paper, it appears to have a 9,200 lb towing capacity. How important is the load leveling suspension feature- will it squat too much in the rear without it? Can the weight distributing hitch compensate for this?

I towed a '77 31' Excella 500 without liquids in the tanks with a '92 Z71 4X4 that had a 350 and 3.42 rear end ratio. These mid to late '70's trailers were light for their size. I remember mine weighing 5640 lbs. at the scales. It could get up to speed but the slightest hill became a problem. This engine also had a throttle body spacer and a Jacobs electronic ignition so it was not slouch but was limited by the 3.42 rear end ratio. My son has a '90 Chevy Sport 4X4 with the same ignition system and transplanted '95 350. Both trucks had 5 sp. manual transmissions. Even before the engine transplant the 3.73 rear end made all the difference in the world.
