2006 vs 2007 Toyota Tundra

I am considering purchasing a 23’ Safari SE with a GVWR of 5600 lbs. I am also considering purchasing a 2006 Toyota Tundra with a maximum towing capacity of 7100 lbs. If I did tow up to the maximum GVWR of the 23’ Safari (5600 lbs.), I would be at 78.8% of the maximum 2006 Toyota tow rating. I live in San Diego and would often be towing this rig up and over mountains. My question is (assuming I want to stay with Toyota) will the 2006 Toyota Tundra be adequate for the job, or should I wait for the new 2007 Toyota Tundra (with a tow rating of at least 10,000 lbs.) to come out at the end of the year?

Wiser folks than me have said, "You'll never want less tow vehicle. Consider that strongly since you are close enough to any variety of mountain experiences. Now did they say the redesigned 2007s wouldn't be out until early 2008?

Member barkingspider found that the more recent Tundra crew cabs had the highest capacity. In addition to tow capacity, pay attention to published payload or load capacity of the tow vehicle itself. This is the max limit of weight you want to put onto your tow vehicle. Load capacity is posted for a vehicle and trim level if so specified; all options you buy after that must subtract from this number (including hitch parts). The remaining load capacity must be enough for everything you need to put on the truck -- driver, passenger(s), topper/tonneau, gear or toys in the box, and hitch weight of your trailer.

Airstream's published number of hitch weight also applies to the basic model; options are extra. Many things that disproportionately weigh down the ball because of their location are LP gas, weight distribution gear, and spare tire (if you opt for the LS package). So actual tongue weight can easily be 200# more than the published...

I tow a 25' Safari SS with a 2005 Tundra which I think is a bit heavier than your trailer but it does struggle over the hills. I fully intend to upgrade when the new Tundra comes out. The 2005 has worked well and I have towed over 10,000 miles with it but I sure would like the extra power.

I had a 2004 Tundra that I would tow a 5800 lb. Excella and found it to be ok on flat surface but even high rise bridges would be a challenge.

I would wait for the 10,000 lb. tow capacity especially if you want a bit of sercurity knowing you will be towing in the mountains.

I was hoping the new Tundra would have the diesel option out by now but since it did not I upgraded to the 2006 Powerstroke Diesel with about 13,000 lb. tow rating.

As mentioned, more power is better when towing especially when the safety of your family and vehicles are involved.
