1997 Ram 1500 Brake light problem

My TV, a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9L, keeps blowing brake light fuses. This happens completely randomly; towing or not towing, on long trips or not... short trips or not. Sometimes I'll go weeks without blowing a fuse. Other times I'll blow 2 in a day. My mechanic has looked carefully but found no obvious shorts in the wiring. Before I bite the bullet and take the truck to the Dodge dealer (probably costly with no guarantee of success), I'm looking for suggestions as to what to try. I have a Prodigy brake controller, which I had for a few years before the fuses started blowing. Is it possible a short in the brake controller is causing the fuses to blow? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Why not disconnect the brake controller by detaching the input cable in the back of the unit and see it the problem continues.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

I might take a look at the tow vehicle brake light switch. Ask your mechanic about replacing it.

Possoble Issue...

Not sure about Dodge, but the brake light switch on my 97 Ford moves each time the brake pedal is pressed and released. After 10 years of moving back and forth the hot wire finally broke at the switch connection and would work intermittantly. When it lost connectivity you could not shift from Park. I replaced the switch and made a new connection.

You may also want to look under the dash area to see if any wiring is in contact with any moving (brake pedal, cutch, or throttle) components during operation.

Hope it's an easy fix for you,

Kevin

Thanks for the suggestions.... I've disconnected my Prodigy brake controller... now just have to drive for a while and see what happens. And my mechanic had suggested replacing the brake light switch as a next step in troubleshooting. Looks like I'm barking up the right trees. I'll keep you posted... and plead for more help if these steps don't cure the problem! Thanks again.
