That one is a 1964 or earlier, the grill changed in 1965. What a beautiful combination of tow vehicle and trailer.

Though we did have a Murcury wagon for a couple of years, our "station wagon" when I was growing up was a pick-up truck/overhead camper combo. With 7 kids we didn't fit in much else. How did we survive all those miles around town and cross country without A/C (in truck or camper) or seatbelts?

I come by my wagon fetish honestly. My parents had wagons from the mid fifties on. 55 and 57 Plymouth's, 59, 62 and 63 Chev's, 64, 66 and 68 Meteor wagons. They always towed a trailer and we toured all over Canada and the US. Dad always got the largest engine he could get and the 8 or 9 passenger version whenever it was available. We kids would fight over who got the very back seat until rules got laid down for that summer. Our friend with the '66 Impala is selling it and going back to his '54 Ford wagon (and his 35 Ford hotrod) as he finds the Impala too new for him (hey, he's an old guy is what we tell him). He's also selling the Award trailer and will use his 17' Boler until he finds the right '54 (or 53/55) Airstream, but that will have to wait until he parts with the Impala/Award units. Both are beauties, and I'd love to snap up the Impala but I'm also in overload with vehicles at the moment.

It is my hope that at some time in the future, when I'm actually retired, to tour the North American continent with the '57 and Airstream. Take our time from place to place. I must tell you though, and I'm sure many others using vintage cars to pull their trailers will also concur, you are never anonymous and almost every stop, be it for gas, a meal or to camp, turns into a show and tell session with people. It's a bit awkward sometimes when we are trying to make time and people want to take a quick look in the trailer and talk about the car, but oh well, at least they like it.

These older cars were built to tow. Put a decent transmission cooler on them, a good hitch, and make sure the transmission and brakes are in excellent condition and they will haul down the road just as well as any vehicle. No, the gas mileage isn't as good as some get, but the cars also don't depreciate, they are extremely fun to drive, and when you are stuck in the 50's and 60's like my wife and I (and our friends) it is a real rush.

Hopefully we will get a chance to meet many of you at various events over the next couple of years.

Interesting picture of the big ol' Lincoln there Road Ruler......

I am guessing that it is a Promotional Airstream Photo, yes???

Strange things happen in those pix once in awhile.....

The Lincoln in that photo pulling the big Sovereign is a 1963. The 1964 was redesigned, and stretched 6" at the rear doors. And Bill K. is correct, the entire front end was redesigned for 65, as a last year freshening, before the all new 1966 Lincoln came out.

But the funny thing, is that the Ford Falcon Sprint Convertible is definitely a 1964.

So what year were the Airstreams??? Probably '64 I am guessing, right??

Hmmm...maybe they did not have access to a brand spankin new '64 Continental yet, so they used a '63......

Attached is one of my favorite Airstream Promo pix..... It is used as the background on my computer several times a year... A 1963 Ford Country Squire pulling a 1963 Airstream Sovereign, or Ambassador.

There was a basketcase 63 Country Squire on ebay last month, rare as one could be....white, blue XL interior (bucket seats and console) A/C, power everything, and a 390 with a factory 4 speed. Probably built special for some big Ford Exec, back in the day. OOooooh....temptation.........

But then I woke up from my dream.....

Good day Scott. The pic of the LIncoln and Falcon is from a post card I bought on Ebay a couple years ago. I see there is a white square in the front windows of the Airstreams. I suspect they are factory or dealer spec sheets for that unit???

A couple of us were looking at the Falcon trying to figure out if it was a 260 or 289ci. There appears to be V8 badging on the front fender. Maybe the Ford experts would know from the pic.

I'll probably never tow an AS with it, but I have a '59 Campe teardrop style trailer that I would love to tow with my '55 Chevy wagon.

Like the shots of the old wagons. We're working on a '60 Chevy Nomad with the original 348, auto. Can't wait to get it done and hook up to our '62 Tradewind. Also have a second '60 wagon and a '67 Safari which are next in line....if I can find the time.

Pictures would be very good. We love pictures. I sold a couple of 348's to two of our car club buddies, and a 409 to a friend - that one is intended for his 59 Biscayne 2dr, but he's got a number of projects on the go so it will be a long time. I frequently see a '59 red and white Bel Air wagon the fellow drives daily. I sure do like them. Great tow vehicles.

If you didn't want to bother with all the work of upgrading a 50 year old classic you might consider the ultimate performance station wagon.

'71 Buick

I tow our Tradewind with a '71 Buick convertible. It is the Centurion model and the wheel base is the same or close to the Estate Wagon. The long wheel base with the 455 CID engine is an awsome pull. My dad towed a 1950 26' Pan American trailer to California from Michigan with the family 1948 Nash Ambasador (sp?).....in 1952. We got our kick(s) from Rte 66 but made it! So many of the earlier cars were capable if not comfortable with heavy tows. Wagons would be great if they have the WHEEL BASE and muscle for your long AS. WDH is muchly recommended, however.

This must be a fine automobile. I do not know it's tow capabilities. Horse power is a factor in towing but Foot Pounds of Torque is more of a factor. All the horse power offered today will not mean good towing capabilities. With heavy long trailers tow with a heavy/long wheel base vehicle or the trailer will be doing the towing.

JeeWizz,I love wagons,Ive had a few and and sold my 92 caprice classic to the neighbor boy who needed a car.They were great work cars,But I no longer work w/ my tools full time and my wife did say my new daily driver should be another TV.I would love to have a 69 or 70 chevy wagon but it wouldnt be a practical 2nd vehicle.But I have been looking at some roadmasters,I think I could set one up to do just fine.

It is my understanding that the Roadmasters work very well for towing. I've seen several with trailer in tow heading down the highway although they are rapidly disappearing. When they are also used as the daily driver they wear out like anything else and with no new one to replace it people move to other things. Or they get sold to the neighbor kid who drives it to death .

Dodge Polaris 383 4-barrel carb monster

I did not read the whole thread but if this is a repeat then flame me - My parents had a Dodge Polaris with a 383cid engine that could tow anything. We used it to tow our SOB when I was growing up. It was long - nice thing about it was it was so long that you were half way there backing out the garage. I use to hang out in the rear facing jump seat in the back - fold down the back seat and you could carry a full sheet of plywood in there - no problem. Dad sold it to a guy who wanted the engine for a race car - ran like a top when we sold it.
