19 mpg with new diesel

I took my Tradewind for a test run today with my new Jeep Cherokee 3.0L Diesel. I drove about 100 miles and topped off the tank before and immediately after the run.

I got an amazing 19.1 mpg driving 60-65 most of the time.

That is only 2 mpg less than without the Airstream. The power was stronger than I expected. I barely had to give it any "gas" to start and maintain speed (even up hill).

I couldn't be happier.

Hi, that's amazing "Fuel" mileage; I hope you didn't put "Gas" in it. With Diesel hitting $4.01 per gallon today you'll need all the mileage you can get. Mean-while I have to be, just happy, to get 11.5 while towing.

Thanks for the real-world towing info Mike. It is good to see Mercedes is still going at it after a half-century of dedication to passenger diesels. I've an '87 Mercedes turbo diesel with 300K+ miles that literally still runs as strong as when it was new.

The Benz 3.0L CRD is probably one of the most advanced diesels on the market and, from your numbers, it seems to payoff out on the road. Common rail injector system, 375lb torque, piezo injectors, computer controlled intake swirl, variable pitch turbo for lowend boost, plus low noise and low emissions.

You might want to report your long-term results. My experience is that one tank's worth of fuel, or about 100 miles, can be misleading. So many variables. I don't know if I've ever seen just a 10% decrease in mileage from towing a travel trailer versus not towing.

The 19 towing is in line with what our customers with this engine are getting but the solo mileage is lower, most are reporting mid to high 20's solo.

that's awesome mileage for towing.

as of march 08, 2008 in SW Georgia. regular gas costs 3.18 while deisel is 3.89

hence 19 mpg for deisel = 19 x 3.18 / 3.89 = 15.181 mpg for gasoline engines comparatively speaking

New To Me CRD Liberty

Let us see how it goes.
I bought a 06 Jeep Liberty CRD today.
It has repairable design problems and the little tug has the potential to do what I want.
I paid $3.95/gal for diesel today and saw prices rise at the pump twice during the day.
The idea is to tow the Tradewind around the country before all blows up.
