08 Suburban 1500 vs. 08 Expedition EL
Anyone tow with either an 07 or 08 Suburban with the 5.3l engine?
How about the Ford Expedition EL, seems to have abetter pwoerband than the Suburban, and 6-speed automatic.
I crashed my 97 Suburban last niht, andit might well be a total loss. The two vehicles above seem to make the most sense to me as a replacement.
My preference is 1/2 ton, and not a pickup.

Bummer on your Suburban , maybe it is time to go with a vintage tow vehicle.

hope no 1 was hurt in the bashup....
IF killer brakes is a goal include the datsun armada in your selection process.
stopping distance was, and may still be best in class...

at first glance more expensive but fully tricked out the s/e are not much less $...
the 05/06s are coming off lease and nicely priced.

Why not the 2500 Sub? It has a heavier frame and suspension and larger brakes.

The 1/2 ton wagons have 8000 and 9000 tow capacity, and I tow only about 5500 lbs soaking wet and well fed.
The 2500 has bad fuel economy, and leaf spring rear suspension, none of which I am keen of any longer.
I have not considered the imports, other than a Sprinter van.

Ouch... hope YOU are ok! I'm really with 2air on this one.... I've always disliked domestic brakes... I haven't driven the Armada.. but I've always like imported brakes.

Uwe---Be sure to consider renting the TV first. I just returned today from a 2 week trip with a new 2007 Suburban 1500 with 5.3, flexfuel, active cylinder management, and tow package rented from Avis. I didn't trailer with it, but I could have. Nice stable feel with just two onboard. Aveaged 18 MPG in a mix of rural roads in the coastal mountain range of central Oregon.
My sense was that it was geared pretty high and not enough power to tow comfortably at the rated tow capacity.

HI Uwe,
I have a 2004 Suburban with a 5.3 eng., 3.73 axle ratio,2WD. I use this to tow my 34ft trailer and have not had any problems. I do tow in drive (3rd gear)and get about 10.5 mpg consistently and that is calculated on paper not the onboard computer.I get on average 16mpg in city and 19-20 mpg on hwy. I do know that I am at the top end of the tow rating with my trailer but I to like the ride of a half ton when not towing and at this time I am still working and do not get to travel as often as I would like. I know that many people would disagree with using a half ton to tow this size trailer but I know a lot of members in my unit that have been using them for a long time and have good results. I will say that what towing I do is in the southeast so I do not know what the performance would be elsewhere.Also I have the autoride feature as well which is a automatic leveling device and it works great. Hi Uwe,
I just purchased a new 2007 Ford Expedition EL 4X4 with the heavy duty tow package. I believe it is rated to tow 8750 lbs. Actually, the shorter Expedition is rated to pull more than the EL. I haven't used it to tow my AS yet, so I can't give you any first-hand info on how it tows. I know people on this forum have lots of advise on vehicles to tow with, but I also have to drive this around town for the next 8 years or so. It's a very comfortable ride and doesn't bounce around like the Excursions did (my sister had one of those--bad ride if you ask me). I don't venture too far with my trailer, so I'll probably won't be hitting the mountains too soon with the Expedition. I've only had it for a week, but so far I love it!

If it is killer brakes you desire you may be looking in the wrong place. If you go to the link below and scroll to the bottom it compares the stopping distances of various SUV's. By comparision the burb isn't that great.

The dates vary on the charts, the newest I can find is 1999.

The Suburban does have more storage overall. 7cubic feet, according to the literature. But you have to remove 100lbs of 3rd row seat to get that. The Expedition's 3rd row seats fold down into the floor.
Behind the 3rd row, the Suburban has 3 more cubic feet of room.
The Suburban is also 400lbs lighter, in 4WD trim, than the Expedition EL in 4WD trim.
Having driven both, the Expedition has a distinctly peppier feel to it, and much better seats, at least for my size and weight. I wish I could tow with both of them to really see and feel the difference.
