I was checking out the specs for the 08 3/4 ton suburbans and wow, they only come with a 3.42 rear end! Yeah I know they have a 6 speed transmission but I am thinking it is going to be short on arse with that kinda rear end ratio. I had a 1/2 ton with a 3.42 and it would barely pull the coleman pop up that I had up a grade without complaining.
Why are they doing this? They must be shooting for better economy while unloaded, but my experience is this ratio is so tall you have to give it more throttle to wring any umph out of it.
I find this interesting, and it could be the 6 speed will make the difference. Still, it seems like a tall order. Maybe 3.73 and 4.10 will be history. I see this still as a big problem for SOB and all the wind they catch. The truck will never get out of second gear??
Last time there was a gas crunch and the feds introduced CAFE in the early seventies, Jeep put out a long wheelbase stretched CJ that was badged as a Scrambler. They were not only looking to compete in the mini-truck market, but they were figuring that they could use this model to increase the CAFE numbers with 2:92 gears (front and rear axles). It was a pig! I had two of them and re-geared to 4:10 with air lockers. Cost almost 3 grand back in the day.
With the new CAFE numbers coming up, I wouldn't be surprised to see Toyota lobby for an INCLUSION of all models in the mix without separating trucks. A 50 mpg Preius could go along way towards offsetting a 16-18 MPG Tundra.
There is a typo in the catalog because if you go and see them in person, the window sticker says 3:73. The 3/4 tons don't come with the 4:10 anymore. I have seen them and was close to signing but, next year GM will be offering the 4.5l diesel and I am going to wait for that one. We have a 98 and haven't been able to sell it. 1 more year isn't going to hurt, especially for a diesel.

Any one out there have one??
Chuck,
The Chevy website shows the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Suburban in 2x2 and 4x4 as both having a 3.73 available. Maybe the dealer only ordered a lower numerical rear end ratio?

Looking at the 3/4 ton, I only saw the 3.73 upgrade option, but, when I went to the 1/2 ton, I was given the option of 3.73 or 4.10 gearing:
ENGINE/CHASSIS AXLE RR
Rear axle, , 3.73 ratio (GT4) $0.00
Rear axle, , 4.10 ratio (GT5) $100.00
