Can I plug in the AS without the batteries to use it as an emergency guest room during the winter (temps to -20f)? I store the AS covered, without the batteries.

I have a 1976 Sovereign and it's been plugged in, on and off, all summer without a battery. I use the 12 volt off the converter. The converter doesn't seem to care if there's no battery or not. I have the cables isolated and insulated.

The converter would prefer to have a battery attached. The load of the battery smooth out the voltage from the converter and keeps it within an acceptable range that. No battery load the converter will put out close to 14 volts. If you have a large draw with all the lights and the heater on you may exceed the capacity of the converter. The battery would provide that additional current.

If your trailer is equipped with Parallax 7300 series it is OK to not have battery in the circuit. It is in the following document-

If this is not the model converter/charger in your trailer there should be documentation to answer this question.

While I run my 7300 Parallax with batteries out of the circuit at times, I prefer to have them in the circuit when possible, as a protection against surges caused by a failure in the converter/charger.

The ripple ac voltage present on the 13 volts produced by the converter is damped out by the presence of a battery. For some electronics that are susceptible to noise on the power supply line may have noisier audio 60 cycle hum.

This has not been my experience with my 7355. I had one of them open and saw several large filter capacitors. When converter is shut off with a light load you can observe the capacitor's voltage decay. I have observed no difference in noise in the audio system whether the batteries are in circuit or not. All indications to me are the power is very well regulated.

Now if there were some type of failure all bets off.

BTW I take my AGM batteries out of circuit when they're fully charged and its hot.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I generally remove the batteries and store them in the basement, off the ground to protect them from the very cold temperatures we have here in Wyoming. But I think will need to use the As as a extra guest room over Christmas. Again, thanks for the info.
