This will be our first time heading south for 4 months this winter leaving in Nov. We will be traveling to quite a few places, OR, CA & AZ before finally reaching Tucson where we will be spending 6 weeks. Our post office informed us we can rent a PO box, but will hold our mail for only 3 months. We have friends in CA, we could have our mailed sent to them, but they would be responsible for sorting through it & mailing the important mail to us, at our expense of course. We do not have family where we live who could collect our mail.
Is there a better alternative?
Thank you!

Do you know what a learning experience is? A learning experience is one of those things that says "You know that thing that you just did? Don't do that."

Have your important stuff emailed or autopay. Allow a friend or neighbor to pick up the mail. Start culling your junk mail by registering at a less mail app.

Be aware that a mail-forwarding service may not be the best bet. They are easy to set up, and a forwarding order at the Post Office will have all of your mail sent there. However, when you want to go back to your old address you CANNOT just fill out a forwarding order at the PO. You have to contact everyone who sends you mail at the service address and have them change your address back. For four months it probably isn't worth it.

You mentioned having your friends in CA do the work for you, and that may be your best bet. You can then fill out a temporary mail forwarding order to cover the four months you will be traveling, and then your mail will automatically return to being delivered at your home.

Since your friends aren't really in the mail forwarding business, covering their out-of-pocket expenses would certainly be legal and right. Rather than pay them $1/mailing or whatever, you might want to just take some friends out to dinner at a nice eatery, or take them to a show, or something like that that they would enjoy.

What we do when we have neighbors sorting through our mail is buy some prepaid Priority Mail shipping envelopes. We leave those with the neighbor who can then just fill in the address and drop it in the mail to us, no hassle. We typically don't need mail sent to us more often than once or twice per month.
