Key West in Winter

I plan a trip to Key West in late November and early December. Will I be able to find an RV Park with space?

You might have a shot prior to the first of the year, but I would definitely have something arranged in advance.

We have stayed at Boyd's which is just outside of Key West and liked it pretty well. We just got lucky when we drove up last December and got a good site for a week. It's a little pricey at $99/nite but very convenient to the activities on Key West. February is the biggest month and is hard to get a site unless booked well in advance. This winter we are staying at KOA on Sugarloaf, which is about 20 miles out. We stayed there once already and enjoyed being out and away from it. An upscale park is Blue Water Key resort which is between Sugarloaf Key and Key West. Over a hundred bucks per nite and lots of class As, Prevosts, Bluebirds, has tiki huts, on the water, very nice.

Definetly get reservations now if you can. Some parks fill up a year in advance.
Long about the first cold snap up North, every other vehicle coming into Fla. is a Moho or Fifthwheel.

We stayed at Boyd's last year for a couple of nights, very pricey (but what wouldn't be down there) also very nice and close to everything. We noticed a number of state parks lining the road through the Keys on the way down, with people camping right on the shore----looked spectacular and might be available. Key West is an interesting place, worth the trip. Have a great time!

Another vote for Boyd's in Key West

Hi,

You can't beat Boyd's for being close in, only a mile or 2 in to Key West. There is a KOA back up the road somewhere (20 miles ??) but that is too far I think for convenience.

Boyd's is a little pricey as others have said, and the spots are tight so don't arrive after dark or I don't know how you would get into some of the spots.

But, it is beautiful there and well worth it so that is also where I will be staying again this year after the Can Opener...

best regards,

I briefly checked out RV parks in the Keys last year as we were thinking to go there - I got a shock when I saw the rates that were being charged! We went to Arizona instead!

We plan to go to Louisiana and Florida this winter, but probably won't make it to the Keys, most likely we will spend our time along the Gulf Coast around Sarasota and Venice.

I was told that the reason the Keys are so expensive is that many of the RV parks have been converted to condos and there are few RV parks left.

Prices are dictated by supply & demand I guess.

Hope you find a spot that suits wishes and budget! I'll be interested to know what you find as I wouldn't mind making another tripo there, but not at the rates I was quoted! Maybe I'm wrong & just checked the wrong parks! Seems to me the rates I got were well over $100 a night though.

Brian.

Key West

Leo's campground is the closest to Key West and a lot cheaper than Boyds. It is not on the water and nothing special but closer and more reasonable. Enjoy - it's a great place to visit.

Boyds is your best bet. With a 31 call ahead. I got mine in but only in certain spaces. It will be expensive. The state parks are very nice. Reservations can be a problem. John Pennekamp is a must see.

I enjoy Key West!!

there's 300 bars in Key West!! I been to some of them. I got Duval faced on $hitstreet once.
I recommend checking out Mel Fischer Museum. amazing stuff in there.
The "Danger" Tours run the best day tourista type boats- great time, say hello to captain Wade for me.
If you qualify for MWR use, NAS Key West has RV spots that are very cost effective.right on the water.and they have a small commisary.
Schooner Wharf Bar is a good hang out, watch out for the dogs.
I "found" a somewhat deserted road out by the old missile sites, might work in a jam, till the law cruises by.
Oh just go, whatever happens it'll be a good time.

The Key's are so much more than Key West. For 13 years we stayed on Marathon in a yearly timeshare and just went to Key West for the day. Bahia Honda State Park($36.00 per day) is really nice and there's a beach. Also you could check out Knights Key Campground,($35.00 to $63.00 in the off-season), to see if they are still open. They were one of the campgrounds that sold out to developers, but the project has been put off for several years and they have remained open. They also have a beach area (rare in the Key's), and are on a key just before the seven mile bridge.

Can't wait until the day we have an airstream to take to the Key's. Wish I hadn't let my husband talk me into selling out.

We go to The Keys every year . . .

Love Bluewater. It's out favorite place to go. We also enjoy Long Key, Bahia Honda SP & lets not forget Curry Hammock SP. Curry is a little hidden gem. Don't tell anyone. We just got back a few weeks ago from staying at Bahia and Curry Hammock.

Where the locals eat try:
Hogfish Grill - on Stock Island
Try the hog fish of course!!!

Keys Fisheries Market & Marina - on Marathon (end of 35th Street)
Try the lobster reuben or pan sauteed hog fish. Yummy!!!
***Don't tell anyone about these either***

HAVE FUN!!!

I have been looking at Bluewater Key on-line and I am confused.

There are 2 sites named Bluewater.
Are they the same??

Bluewater Key RV Resort RV Lot Rentals By Owners

& Bluewater Key A luxury RV Resort

Bluewater Key: Resort

"We are not affiliated with Bluewaterkey.net or Bluewater Key Lot Rentals by Owners or Bluewater Key – Clark Rentals."

What is the difference??

Possibly,
I would make a reservation. The state parks are through reserve America and Boyd's is the only campground near Key West unless you are Military.
Boyd's has some small sites so definately ask for the biggest sight you can afford. I put my 31ft Classic in a spot with full hookups that I though it would never fit.

The difference . . .

The .com site covers reservations for the majority of the resort. The .net site covers the reservations for the handful of sites not listed on the first site. I am not sure why the .net site owners have their own web site. I have always used the .com site since they handle our favorite sites and the office is on property. It just depends on where you want to be. Try comparing the maps on each web site.

We'll be at Key West for about 3 days in the first week of November—is it crowded that week?

Yes. The lovely snow birds have migrated by then. We usually go during the September shoulder season. If you don't already have a reservation you can probably get a walk-up site at a state park like Bahia or Curry Hammock. These are a little drive from Key West. If you want to go to Bluewater $$$ (10 miles from KW) just give them a call. They will be glad to tell you what the availability looks right now.

And if you are going through Orlando and need a campground suggestion. Go to Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. This is a City of Orlando park. Very nice and very cheap.

Safe Travels-
