- 26 Degrees | Everything is fine

I am back in Steamboat for my annual 30 days of skiing. First night here the temperature was -26 degrees when I woke up. I was toasty warm and no problems (knock on wood). So for all those folk who doubt the 4 season capabilities of an AS - you're not quite right. Oh - I'm not the only AS here - several full timers, as always with good advice built on experience. will post pics soon.

Warm?

All I want to know is how much propane you are using at -26?! How about your tanks, not frozen? My dump valve freezes at 33F!

Enjoy yourself....

+ 84 degrees today

WOW! -26 degrees and skiing.

Its 84degrees here in North Texas today and I am getting ready for the Texas Vintage Rally. Should be about 125 + other Airstreamers there. Water skis only though.

You know, our 67 is presumably winterworthy, but I wouldn't trust it that far, not even here in Angel Fire, where it's been somewhat warmer than Steamboat. We're even supposed to have above-freezing temperatures tomorrow!

I gotta salute that, not freezing up at -26. Be real careful about somebody doing you a favor and stopping your "dripping faucets". I had propane tank valve freeze on me before, too.
So you're practicing your skiing technique, eh? Usually you cant keep your goggles defogged at -26. Turn, turn, turn, turn, tree, turn, turn, turn, snowboarder, turn, turn, turn, turn, tree, turn, turn, turn...

Plus or minus?

Hi, tell us more on how to survive in cold weather and by all means, post pictures. I have never even been in + 26 degree weather yet alone minus 26 degrees. I think my lowest was +28 degrees.

J-,

Thats darn cold.

I believe if it gets much colder, the oxide layer on your aluminum skin will start to slough off, leaving your Sovereign with a perfect mirror finish. Please report if this is true.

Pictures will really be great - I can't imagine -26 degrees - especially here in Florida. It is currently 64 degrees in here and I have a small quartz heater going.

Cold weather camping is something that I enjoy. However, I have never camped at -26 degrees. I have had trouble with condensation freezing the door shut at temps in the teens. Best of luck to you. Please report back to this forum concerning your propane usage. Have fun skiing.

@SafariSS - I am using about 1 tank every 3-4 days. Oh + btw folks it has warmed up considerably - nights are in the 10 degrees range which is relatively tame.

@NevadaGeo - no dripping required, using tank with tank heater and all other plumbing is inside and warm

@markdoane - wow, that would be amazing, particularly if it aided in my re-polish this spring

Glad you haven't frozen. How's the skiing? What are you doing when you are not on the hill? Have you met with the other Aistreamers? And last but not least have you got some pictures for us to see?

Have any tips for us on staying warm and winter camping?

Skiing is outstanding - the unfortunate economy has made skiing during the week like being at a private mountain and the weather has been great with fresh snow almost everyday. I have met a few other Airstreamers - a couple right next to me in a 34' have been full timing here and in the summer in Tenn on the Occoee for 8 years. Another guy is living over on the island and has just begun resto of a '67

Tips - hmmm. . . .be prepared and think through the weak points in the design and fix them before you go.

Tips.....keep your tips up, don't cross your skiis, keep your weight on the uphill ski, lean forward and ski aggressively. Deeper snow, weight back more. Both skiis on the same side of a tree....
