Andy, there's a zillion threads on this very subject. Most of them (80%) tear out the carpet and put in pergo-type flooring. Another 15% put in tiles or linoleum. The 5% that stick with carpet do so because they live north of the arctic cirlce and want the floor to be as warm as possible.
Once you start removing the carpet you will see why few members ever want to go back to carpet. If you need carpet, use throw rugs--they clean up nice and easy and if not, they replace easy.
