When you pull up that "really good shape" carpet, you'll be surprised at the stains on the underside of the backing and all of the dirt which has filtered down through the carpet and the pad. No doubt that this contributes to the smell inside.
Yup, We've been down that dirty path before, thus the desire to tug it all out. Every other time it's been an easy decision since the carpet looked bad.
We plan on pulling out the gaucho's then planking front to rear but I've been informed I have to finish putting ceramic tile the laundry room first .

Well I think we will make the jump from carpet even though the original stuff is in really good shape. Yesterday on the way home from our camping trip Mrs. HiHo noted the Airstream smells "old". We were discussion using wood like we did in our SOB RV several years back but this thread has changed my mind.
One question- the 1/16 gap that appears and dissappears, is that between each segment or just at the exterme edges? With our foot and pet traffic any gap quickly fills with dust and then grows and grows and grows...I know because that's what happened to the floor in our weekend trailer .
We are noticing expansion/contraction between each segment (mostly along the short side meaning it is expanding/contracting along its length), just like a wood floor does. As previously stated, it is about the width of a playing card. Not sure how this will work long term as some "grit" will enter the small crack and get stuck in the adhesive. But, we like it so far.

Since you mentioned it, I took a closer look and I see small gaps between the ends of the sheets, though mine are more like the thickness of a sheet of notebook paper.
Well today we decided to jump in feet first. We bought 5 boxes of Hickory since it seems to be the best match for our '77 psuedo wood faux vinyl interior. We also decided to remove the front Gaucho and install 2 recliners.
The gaucho removal took 10 minutes, pulling the carpet about 30 minutes. Getting out the 5,000,000 staples 1 hour then removing the tile and 1/4" underlayment in the kitchen- 2 hours. I still have to remove the 200 screws that held in the underlayment.
This process has divulged some of the old girls secrets. The two street side lower vistas have been replaced with single pane units. Now we see that so has 1 ft of flooring under them. It looks like the carpet was pulled back, the flooring fixed then the original carpet relayed.
Cost so far- 5 boxes of flooring at $40+-, 2 recliners at $179, 6 pack of Samual Adams Black Lager $?

Our last visit to the trailer showed us that we probably shouldn't have put the flooring down in 90 degree heat. There are several new gaps now that the temps are cooler. The floor still looks okay but the gaps are noticable to the perfectionists that we are. I would recommend installing on a 70ish degree day.

I just installed Konecto Prestige Walnut & it looks better than I could have imagined! I was hesitant to go with laminate, but this product blew my expectations out of the water. I have 5 unopened boxes (122 square feet) leftover if anyone is interested in a great deal.
Results of day 1 (deconstruction) Photo 1 shows the Gaucho removed - Holy Cow that Univolt is Huge! It and the battery may get relocated depending how well the new recliners fit.
Photo 2 - the Dirt Trail that was under the foam pad. I expected worse.

Photo 4 - Those Blasted Tiles! What doesn't show are the 100+ small screws that remain sticking up

We just can't seem to make up our minds on our new floor. We went shopping Monday for Armstrong tile and my hubby liked the looks of the pergo type laminate. So, we decided to go that way instead only to be talked out of it by the salesman at Lowe's - he said that floor was not meant to be used in the extreme weather conditions found in unheated and/or unvented travel trailers.
So we went back to the Armstrong tile and finally settled on one only to find out that our chosen color was no longer available. Sigh.
Now we are back deciding between the tile and the Konecto.
You guys are awesome! What great information ... we were trying to decide if we should trade for a 34' or something... but now we want to just put in the new flooring and curtains, etc. (BTW.. did y'all take out stock in Conecto Flooring before this thread got started.?.?.)
Anyway, Phil is all ready to take on this flooring project as soon as we're back in the AS in December. He's already changed the corner bed so it lifts for access to the storage. And I'm looking for our "signature" material for curtains!
Please keep us informed about all this... I don't think there's anything AS related that can't be solved on this Forum
All your projects look great! Can't wait to get started.
