Glued Down Laminate vs. Floating

I read several articles on laminate flooring - everyone seems to be using the floating floor method. Is there any good reason besides being totally permanent not to glue down the laminate? I know it will void the warranty just wondering if anyone has successfully used laminate and glued it down and with what type of glue.

"Totally Permanent" that is the reason not to. The trailer flexes much too much to support a rigid system. I am sure you have seen trailers that had tile glued down and how it pops up over time. Floating is easy to install, easy to remove, and a lot more forgiving to the road.

They call it a floating floor for a reason. You DO NOT want to glue it down. It needs room at the edges and all over and should not be affixed to any sub-floor so it can float (expand and contract).

Check out this thread...

Lots of good information there on flooring and istallation.

Thanks

Thanks to all who have answered so far - can't find anyone who has glued the floor down and responded but several who floated it. We are planning to float it thanks to the information we have received. I had looked all around the internet and the best info was here at Airstream.

We glued one down in our old RV and never had any issues although I was much tougher to install. I figure the hardwood will flex just about as good as the plywood subfloor so if for some reason I decided to glue another, I'd go for it.

There is no flex in the laminate itself and it will pop up off the subfloor sooner or later. By floating it you will elimante that problem. The only other issue you will face is cutting the trim and the you will have to (glue) and or find some other way to attach it to the walls to hide the quater inch you need to float the floor. By the way laminate is not a hardwood but a composite and it does not flex at all. If you haven't bought yet you may want to look at cork as an option. You can glue it down as it will flex and looks great and a lot easeir to cut.

For the simply reason of easier installation, choose floating of glued in my opinion.

I have tile in my Race Trailer. I am constantly dealing with it popping up. I personally hate it.

glued or not

It won't last because the laminate doesn't flex and the floor will.

It would be easier, but some floating floors have the joints glued.

My 73 had parquet floors which were glued in. They seemed to do fine.

Depending on where you live the wide temperature variations in storing a trailer is not usually an application for which residential flooring is designed for, and may also be an installation factor. At least that's what, one manufacturer told me.

Floating Floors

All laminate floors must "float". You do not glue it to the sub floor and you leave a 1/4" space from the wall all around the perimeter. This is to allow for EXPANSION and contraction.

It seems when useing a floating floor the wood floor in the airstream would be fine for a subfloor. Just leave 1/4 inch around perimiter for expansion ect right?

The existing floor in your Airstream is the subfloor, yes. Leave 1/4" around the perimeter of the laminate flooring. The gap can be covered with a piece of 1/4 round (or other such molding) attached to the interior skin.
