Floor tile

My 1967 safari has floor tile under carpet that has been added, is that asbestos tile? Is there a site to see what the original interior looked like?

It is probably best to assume so.

Are the tiles 9x9 or 12x12? The 9x9 definately are the old (VAT) asbestos kind (unless an ambitious PO cut them down to that size). When they took asbestos out of the tiles (VCT), they changed the size to 12x12s. Not all 12x12s are asbetos-free - if they are from the 60's & have black backing when peeled up, they most likely contain asbestos too.

How to know VAT vs VCT

I have the 9x9 original tiles in a 1958 18' Traveler. I started peeling the old tiles up, but then stopped to get on this forum. What are the steps for precautions. I am halfway done, but some of the tiles are stuck to give me issues getting it up.

In restrospect, I would have put an overlay sub plywood over the top of the tiles, and call it a day, but I am past that point now.

What else besides a respirator filter mask should be used to protect myself?
