58 Flying Cloud International- Carpeting?

Help!! I am new to AS. I just bought a fabulous 58. Last owner for 40 yrs. About the most upgraded AS you can imagine. It appears as though it was ordered new from International with carpet. Is that possible. It has everything and it looks like that might have been the case. Please help!!! Harry, Temecula, CA

I guess anything is possible. In the 50's and older trailers, things weren't yet standardized and trailers could be ordered more customized than today. Would love to see more pics of your new baby...welcome aboard!

Looks like the original tiles are still underneath the flooring. Meaning that a previous owner must have added the carpeting. While it is possible, I have never seen carpet in a 50's Airstream that was originally installed by the factory. The remaining floor reminds me a whole l ot of what i found under the forest green shag in my very own 1958 Flying Cloud.

OK. I looked under the full cabinets, closets, etc... and there is carpeting under it all. So this AS was spec'd with carpet originally, just as I was told by the woman that had it for 40 years...

Just when you think you've seen everything...

The tiles are very similar to what were in our Safari too....but, I have to agree with you 745, it would be pretty unlikely that someone would go to the extra effort to take out all the built-ins to install carpet under them after the fact. Most would only add it up to the cabinets and maybe inside - but not under them. I agree, as amazing as it sounds, I think it was a custom order from the factory.

If only these trailers could talk and tell their stories...

I don't think so...

I have a 58 Flying Cloud and I'm the second owner. The AS dealer that sold it to me put down wall to wall carpet but stapled it down without a pad. They were trying to cover up the missing and broken tiles -- exactly the same 9x9 asbestos backed tiles that you have. Under the bed were some dirty, but virgin tiles that I tried to harvest as replacements. Not possible.

Another clue as to the PO having installed the carpet (not the factory) would be the agglomerated foam pad. In the 50s they would have used some fiber/horsehair padding. Could it have been part of a larger restoration project, one where the cabinets were removed/replaced?

Hi Ken, The prior owner told me that it originally came with carpet and that she replaced it. There is no doubt now that it had been originally made with the carpet in place. Uwe recommended that I check in the deep dark sections to see if the carpet was there, too. We have torn it apart to verify that the carpet was under all the cabinetry. See attached photos.

There is carpet under all of the cabinets, lining the wheel wells, etc. We also checked with carpet folks and the carpet in there (not the berber that the prior owner of 40 years installed later) was period correct.

Although I am new to AS's, I have significant experience with coachbuilt cars and the research associated with it. It seems clear. Who would have thought?

I really appreciate all the help that I have received from the AS folks. I'll work on the Coronado Mfg lights. Those are buggers and I need all four!!! I guess adapting a generic will work. Thanks again!

Oh ok - I did not see that - I thought you were referred to the berber carpet she put in - yeah that looks like 50's carpet to me - as someone said anything is possible back in those days - that is a VERY custom trailer you have - there is stuff on it I've never seen before - you should also do some research on the ghost number on the front and back of that trailer - it is a very low number and could possibly been owned by an Airstream officier and/or maybe even been on some significant caravans.
