Airstream trailer shocks are specific. Contact a dealer or Inland RV.

To expand on that .....Airstream shocks are mounted in a more or less horizontal position and are designed to work in that position. All other shocks are mounted and designed for opperatioin in a vertical position. Mounting a shock designed for vertiacl opperatioin in a horizontal position means the shock will no longer perform the task as the oil inside the shock is no longed in position to dampen movement relative to the valving inside the shock.

This mounting arrangement was created in 1967 to reduce the space needed for running gear inside the coach.

Airstream or it's dealers are the only source for these shocks.

I would see that to be correct on oil shocks, but I hear a lot of people using the Monroe RV Gas shocks . Gas don't care about direction .. Just a thought ?

IF the gas-charged Monroe RV shocks can be used, I can post a link to a place that had an awesome price on them.... but I'll wait to hear from Airstream-knowledgable people.

The gas charge is not in place of oil it is in addition to oil. And the gas shock may have a force that is greater than the shock bracket can handle.

Contact a knowledgable shock retailer and as them if the shock will work in a horizontal manner. Or ask them if you can return the shock after installation. you may not knwo after installation of a gas shock if it is working as the gas charge will always have pressure in resitance .

Or ask your local Airstream dealer if you can use any shock for a horizontal installation.

Shocks

Airstream shocks, since mid 1968 models, are horizontal. However, they work vertically equally well.

Vertical shocks, of any kind, will not work horizontally.

The current price of Airstream shocks from some parts stocking dealers, is much less that many vertical shocks.

Also, we have had numerous reports from customers that used the Monroe gas shocks, that they experienced shearing of some of their shock studs.

Why in the world, someone is looking for a substitute for the cheap Airstream shocks, is a HUGE mystery, AND a big gamble.

Save yourself from possible damage to your Airstream, and use the shocks that Airstream has been using for over 48 years, with zero problems.

Andy
