Replacement shocks for a 1973 Argosy 22'?

Hello,

I just bought a 1973 Argosy 22' and was wanting to know what shocks to purchase to replace current warn-outs. I'm new to airstream trailers and really enjoying the vintage trailer. Thanks.

If the shocks are mounted in an almost horizontal manner (and I believe they are) this is a dealer item only. Find an Airstream dealership and place an order.

Airstream/Argosy shock absorbers are a special "horizontal" type, made by Gabriel especially for Airstream.

No one has them except Airstream and it's authorized dealers.

Their dealers who typically stock parts, will have them available for you.

A friend of mine got replacement shocks for his Airstream at NAPA, but he did have to install different grommets in one end of them.

He took the original shock to them, and they did a cross reference.

I got my shocks at NAPA as well. However my unit is a '66 the last year for vertically mounted shocks. The the internal valving of a vertical shock won't work in a non-vertical position. The design of a vertical shock is such that gravity is needed to work on the fluid inside the shock.

So don't mount a vertical shock in a non-vertical position and don't take your 'Stream out in space. In both situations your shock won't work as designed.

Thanks for the advice.

I appreciate all the good info. These shocks do look to be horizontal. Thanks again.

That is the same one that I used on my '66.

shocks for an old airstream

When we replaced the shocks in our 1972 Overlander we dealt with Out-of-Doors-Mart in North Carolina. I think it was they who had a link to a YouTube demo for replacing the shocks, and my husband claims the demo was really critical for the job- it had an important hint that saved hassles. The replacement went fine after viewing the demo, and the people were great to deal with...

Your absoluely correct.

Vertical shocks placed in a horizontal position are useless.

That's been stated many times over by Airstream and it's engineers.

However, horizontal shocks, used vertically, will work just fine.
