Monroe 555003 shocks???

I have a 1969 overlander, I have replaced the axels and I am needing to put new shocks on. I was told Monroe shock 555003 would work, has anyone used these or have an alternative I can find fairly quick? Thanks for the help

Those are the shocks that Colin Hyde uses and recommends.

I just ordered 4 from Amazon for about 80 bucks with shipping. -Will be putting them on this week. Are you using Axis or Dexter?

I got my axels from Colin, they went in good, but the hub size on the new axel is smaller than the old one, I am nervous about the wheels but I guess with self centering lugs it shouldn't hurt anything??? Oreilly auto parts is getting me the Monroe shocks, then I need new tires. I'd like to get the Michelin mxts but they are pricey!!!

That's interesting about the hub size, but I'm guessing they will work. Are your brakes 10 or 12? I hated buying tires. I ended up buying Carlisle bias ply because they were the most reasonable and an exact replacement. I think a lot of people are going with the radials however.

Several Airstream dealers have the correct shocks for your 69.

Are the Monroes a horizontal shock, that you must use?

A smaller hub would mean 10 inch brakes.

Your trailer was built with 12 inch brakes.

When 10 inch brakes are in perfect adjusment, a tandem axle set will stop 7000 pounds.

Should the brakes fail on your tow vehicle, and you use the trailer brakes to stop your complete rig, you will find that the brakes will over heat, and take a long long time to stop you.

On the other hand a tandem set of 12 inch brakes, in perfect adjustment, can stop 12,000 pounds. Now, you have good things on your side to stop.

Also, "self adjusting electric brakes" have been available for a little while, which keeps the brakes at maximum stopping power.

Here's a good place to get the 555003 shocks if they are what you need. I ordered 6 555001 shocks from them because they had the best price anywhere.

The '67 and later Airstreams had shock absorbers mounted more or less horizontally. This was done to save on interior space. Shocks designed to be mounted vertically will not perform because the valving internally to the shock is in a postion that requires the shock to be mounted verticaly.
