What's with the Rubber Plug in the Floor?

I'm refinishing the cabinets in the 58 Flying Cloud. Pulled out the streetside cabinet with the fridge. Under was this plug, all taped up. I looked at the belly and found that the plug is over this 1 1/2" screened hole. Anybody have an explanation?

I wonder if the original refrig was an icebox? Perhaps this would have been connected to a drain hose?

An icebox is a good suggestion. Also, some RV refrigerators, including our Dometic, have a drain hose to collect the meltwater while de-frosting. In ours, it collects in an aluminum cup at the rear of the refer. This can fill and overflow, so your drain-hole is a good system.

All indications point to the existance of a 3-way original equipment fridge (venting, roof cap, propane stub, soot, etc.). I found the warranty card from the "new" fridge - a Norcold dated 1974. It had a harvest-frickin-gold front panel that just screamed "Replace me!" A friendly guy at the local plywood specialty store sold me a scrap of cherry veneer ply, and even cut it to size. $5!

I'll tear open the rubber plug and see what's under it. I'm dubious that it is a water exiting portal since it's an inch and a half, and covered with a screen. Seems like it would allow water to get between the floor and belly skin, rather than a clean exit.
