Upper storage lockers

I've got a 1978 31' Sovereign and want to replace the upper storage lockers as they are mostly cracked (and I've already moved them out).

I'm considering options to replace them out of plywood (mixed thicknesses to preserve lightness) with simple sliding doors.

My question is, in the original design, there seems to be a little gap in the top part of the locker so that it doesn't go flush with the ceiling. I would like to build cabinets that go flush with the top as it will be a cleaner design. I have this funny feeling that the little gap allowed a little bit of "play" as if allowing flex while traveling. Thoughts?

Flush will be ok as long as they aren't spanning all the way down to the floor. If they're hanging from the ceiling and back wall, like the originals, having them flush to the inside skin shouldn't cause any problems. There won't be any thing to cause them to punch upward into the skin.
I think the gap was part of the rounded over look in the 70s trailers and not wanting to spend time in the factory having to get every one to fit flush on the slight different curvature of each different trailer.
