Tuft and Needle Mattress

With seeing that Airstream is now including a Tuft and Needle mattress in the new Globetrotters, I decided to check it out when I was at the Las Vegas dealer in November. The Tuft and Needle mattresses have great reviews online so it seemed like a pretty good option for us with wanting to do a mattress upgrade. ordering a custom mattress and not very sure of what we would actually receive seemed a little concerning.

We were pleased with how it looked and felt in the Globetrotter so we went ahead and ordered one. We received it at the beginning of the week and so far have been very pleased. It was exactly the same size as our original mattress, an island queen with the rounded corners. It came vacuum bagged but came right back to life as soon as we opened up the plastic. A couple of hours and it was fine to sleep on that night. It offers enough support but the top has a little bit more give then our late 13 pillow top mattress that came with the trailer (they changed the mattress in later 2013 units, not sure what is currently being used).

The mattress is specially made for Airstream and is not available direct from Tuft and Needle. Due to the custom size and a few more layers of people involved (dealer and Airstream), the price is higher then the standard queens from T and N. It was around $1100.

I’m pleased with the purchase and thought others might like to know this is an option for a mattress upgrade.

Thanks for sharing this information on the Tuft and Needle mattress.

Has anyone else had positive (or negative for that matter) experiences with the comfort of this mattress? We are trying to make a decision regarding this mattress.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feed back.

Does anyone else have any input on these mattresses?

Thanks!

Tuft and Needle Mattress

I purchased the T&N queen mattress 2 yrs ago for my Classic Limited and it’s the best foam mattress I’ve ever purchased.
And I’ve tried most of the them. T&N was the best quality and value for the money for me.

Do you have a link to purchase the T&N mattress?

I had excellent results getting a custom foam mattress made from The Original Mattress Factory for the really odd crossways queen in the 25 FB at about half the cost. They are a chain in the middle Atlantic area. This was about 18 months ago... QUALITY of the foam core is tje defining thing for long life and comfort of a mattress. This co. Also sells natural latex mattresses but IMHO at about 3 times the weight of chemically made latex those are impractical in a trailer. (and expensive!!)

Tuft and Needle Mattress

I would call them and ask if they can sell you one for the AS. Mine is a regular queen that was perfect for my remodel in the Limited

We purchased our 28 ft international last August and before ever using it replaced the factory installed mattress with a tuft and needle standard queen. No regrets. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. We just got the standard model, no rounded corners and it works fine.

FWIW: A number of folks on here seem to be happy with Airstream sized mattresses they have purchased from Rocky Mountain Mattress. Especially if you need a curved twin (like me). I am considering giving them a shot.

Just FYI

Mattresses are incredibly personal. Whether someone else thought the mattress was comfortable or not is not a good indicator of whether you will.

I had a tuft and needle mattress and hated it. Top layer was too soft, bottom layer was too hard. Woke up over and over again through the night with dead arms.

Take mattress reviews online with a grain of salt. Most mattress review sites are affiliate marketing sites, and commission rates can skew reviews. You really need to try it out for yourself to know if it works for you.

We agree mattress fit and comfort are personal. We bought the Denver 326391 Short Queen Size RV Supreme Euro Top Mattress with Radius Corners, in November of 2017. Looks great once it expands, and feels terrific when you sit or lie on it for a few minutes. Also seems very well made.

Unfortunately, after sleeping on it for a few months, we've found that while it is plenty thick enough to cushion against the plywood base, and is particularly comfortable when we first get on it, overall the mattress is too soft and offers too little support. For example, two people sleeping on the mattress tend to roll toward each other as the mattress squishes down in the night. I am also getting "dead arms" in this bed. Then, climbing out of the mattress in the morning is a chore. We literally have to roll uphill to the edge of the mattress to climb out over the slope that has formed between us and the edge of the bed.

We will be trying out some improvement ideas ASAP, because this particular mattress is not doing the job. Our firm mattress recommendation is that folks find a way to lie on this particular mattress in a store somewhere for at least 30 minutes before deciding whether to buy it. If it works for you, awesome! Unfortunately, it most definitely does not work for us

Amazon was kind enough to let us return the Denver mattress. Amazing customer service! We’ll be switching to a Sleep Number R5 bed in Oregon sometime next month. We had a Sleep Number bed at home for over a dozen years, and loved it. As an added bonus, the Sleep Number bed will be lighter than the foam mattress it replaces. That’s great, since we are an FB.

Tuft and Needle Mattress

Ok, after sleeping on a pair of vintage Thermarest self-inflating pads for a month, we decided to try upgrading to a pair of their Mondo King 3D camp mattresses laid side by side. These things are amazingly comfortable. Highly recommended. Much less expensive and much lighter than a more conventional mattress, even a Sleep Number. We love this solution!

Since this thread was started about the T&N mattress and I asked a couple of questions relative to how comfortable it was, I would like to add the following:

We are very very pleased with the quality of this mattress. I often have trouble sleeping but can honestly say that I have had few issues in our new GT with the T&N mattress.

Of course, like someone mentioned, mattresses are of a personal nature. But our experience has been positive.

T&N was found to be using fictitious positive review to improve on their access to a larger market. I no longer have the link but it was some web based consumer protection group. Users were having longevity issues with the flatness of the mattress top.

Was able to try out the Tuft and Needles at their new store in Portland. The original version is two layers of foam and 10” but the newer “Mint” is 12” and, for us at least, significantly more comfortable. Anyone know if the Airstream is using the 10” or 12” version in the GT?

I suspect we’ll just cut down a Mint for our twins if Airstream is using 10”.

I’ve got to say I love the customer-centric philosophy of the company and their customer service.

Just an update as I had posted earlier on this thread. I wound up buying a couple of "Lucid" brand memory foam mattresses from Amazon last year. I cut them to fit with a $15 electric knife. It only took a few minutes and I saved mega bucks. The most important thing: they are super comfortable. They feel as nice as my Thermarest mattress at home. Highly recommended if you want a nice mattress and would like to save A LOT of money. Here is a like to my post on another thread with more details
