tambour doors

I need to replace several tambour doors. Does anyone know if you can buy this material in large sheets and cut it yourself?

Not necessqarily the same plastic laminate finish, but you might want to try Outwater Plastics or for real wood, try any wood working store like Rockler.

Put in "tambour" as your keyword search

Winona Manufacturing: Decor Tambour, Ceiling Systems, Kitchen Cabinet Doors is the original manufacturer of the tambors in the vintage units (well our '77 anyway) so you can try them.

thanks guys. I checked Rockler some time ago,but could not find material of correct thickness and slat width. I'll check again with them and check Winona and Outwater also.

If you have all the pieces to the old doors, they can be repaired by putting new backing material on them.

I wish that was our problem! Our doors were falling apart completely. Something about MDF and heat..... We will have order all new and start over.

Through trial and error I have been able to do a pretty good repair:
1. Separate and clean up the old tambour, take off the handles
2. Apply strips of aluminum tape about 6" apart to attach them
3. Cut sections of packcloth (Rockywoods Fabrics, Colorado) the size of the tambours
4. Glue the packcloth to the backs using contact cement

And yes, you can get new cut to size or in large sheets

Some of the Pergo type flooring may be the correct thickness. If you can fine a thickness and pattern you like mill your own strips and attach pack cloth to the back as suggested in a previous post. Contact cement will work fine or you can use "Roo Glue". Any glue that remains flexiable and will glue fabric to wood will work.
