Hello Maxcor -- Hope you're enjoying the Forums! This comes up fairly often. Use the search function on two words: tambour Winona. There's quite a lot of 'how to' if you'll wade through it. Thanks

Tambour

Hi Max and welcome to the forums. I ask this same question a while back. Here is a link to one website that makes them or if you are handy with tools, they sell a tool for making your own. Tambour can get expensive. Dont forget to post pictures and let us know how it works out. I have learned to live with mine for now, but will someday hopefully replace it. - woodworking tools, cabinet hardware, router bits, power tools, Woodworkers Supply, cabinet hinges, drawer slides, woodworking supplies, drawer pulls, hinges - woodworker.com -

Just in case you have not considered it.........old tambour can be repaired and restored very cheaply. It's a labor intensive and stinky process but I (and others I'm sure) can tell you how if you want.

A lot of folks have given up totally on tambor and replaced with double sliders that fit right in the cabinet with a very minor modification. A cool coach I saw used sliders made out of sheet aluminum. Voila!

Oh, by the way, I have some extra unrestored tambour material if you need it.

I am one of the ones who gave up on the tambour---sort of. Here is what I did with the old tambour to make my life in the Argosy easier. Got really tired of trying to slide that stuff. Go in to your search engine and put tambour material and you can probably find the Winona website or perhaps some others that sell all different types of tambour material.

Juel, that's exactly what I'd like to do to my galley...make regular swing-doors faced w/ the original tambour. My original door was missing, though, so I'm still searching for that large piece.
most of the non-professional substitutions I've seen look like crap, as its impossible to match the original fake-finish with any other material.

your doors look great!

I am attempting to repair a few of our tambours this season. I have two bedroom overheads off and was going to replace the material, but in looking onlline, I saw that new material may need some adjustments, as well as cutting to size. Apparently it is too thick and needs to be routered. Since I have no carpentry skills I am going to use the contact cement and new fabric. Check silvertwinkie.com and you will see her very clear acct of this reapair. If link doesn't work, I'll fish it off my computer and enter again. I haven't done it yet, but hope to soon. Ours is a 74 overlander.

Tambour Parts

I went to the Tape Ease page which says it works for Airstreams but I'm not sure how the sizing comes - do you have to buy a full sheet?

Morning Maxcor...I recently found the following site which sells Tambour....
"www.tapeease.com/home.htm. I own a 73 Land Yatch and have replaced a couple of overhead storage compartments. Very easy to do but the important thing was to cut size to exact measurement of old one. Good luck.
I believe this company is located in Wisconsin.

Perhaps you've solved your tambour problem by now. But just to add a little more info. We have a 74 overlander and one project for this year is to replace or repair some of the tambours. The overhead in the bedroom of ours were somewhat "warped" and repairing did not work too well, so after looking at many businesses noted on this board that supply tambour, I finally went to "andy" as was suggested by an interested "streamer" who stopped by after noticing ours. I've phoned inland a few times before for replacement parts, but had also used other companies located nearer me. But this time after contacting Inland, they were extremely helpful, and knowledgable. And now I seem to have some tambour coming which will automatically match the stuff I have, supposed cut to size, and ready to attach my handles (someway) and install (another major obstacle.) Bottom line.....call Andy. Many other companies seemed somewhat confusing, and they may be too thick. Granted, this is all prior to receiving and installing the stuff, but initial impressions were very positive. Cost? $16.25 per square foot. For four overheads: @$150. Good luck. Repair when possible.
