Shades Replacement

How do you get the shade out of the kitchen window holder in a 73 airstream? I want to replace it but I cannot remove it.

One of the mounting brackets is slotted, for the shade spindle (which is flat on that end) to pull out of.

Hi SIU, if you twist it until the flat end slips out, push lightly towards the other side. drop the first side down as you pull the other side out. Hope that helped!

In my 71 the galley window shade is mounted to brackets which are mounted in a plastic window frame. The plastic has become brittle over the years and broken where the bracket is mounted.

The best solution I can think of is a fiberglass patch. Any other ideas?

I went and turned the shade looking for the slot and the plastic where the bracket was attached disentegrated. It is very brittle. It crumbled like a cracker. I think if I get some plastic about the same type, liquid nails and put a up new bracket I can fix it. Just sad that the plastic is so brittle. I am thinking of replacing the whole unit with something else. Any suggestions?

That's exactly the problem I mentioned above. Yu will find the other stuff in the trailer made of the same material is similarly brittle such as the other window trim pieces, and the control panel, but in mine the galley window trim is the only one that holds a roller blind so it is a particular problem. If these are the same type of plastic material as the bathroom sink counter (PBS?) I was not as succcessful as I hoped with regular polyester resin and fiberglass. Maybe epoxy resin will stick better. It may be a good idea to fix the holes without removing the trim as when I took out the front window trim to fix the window small cracks at the rivet holes became big cracks. Sealing those cracks is another problem. I am thinking super glue will wick into the cracks. I could use some suggestions on that fix too! I hope someone out there has some ideas.

Hi Brian. In my 72, I had the same problem. I just took the shade out and made a curtain and John riveted the rod at the top up in side the shade casing. I used the existing bottom rod to hold the curtain tight against the bottom.

Thanks for some good information. I am going to buy an epoxy material like liquid nails and cut a piece of plastic to fit over the hole. I will but on a new bracket on the replacement plastic before I glue it. Hopefully that will work.

That will be on the bottom of the list of thing to do.

You guys have been very helpful.

Now I am going to post a message asking for help with my vents. They were frozen and I sprayed them with liquid wrench a day before I tried to open them. When I put some muscle on the crank I snapped the shaft in half that raises the vent upwards.
