Rivet Recomendations

I am wondering if there is a recomendation as to the type or brand of rivet to use for interior work. Is plain old Home Depot Store bought rivets good enough? Or is there a specific brand I should use. Also - What is a good rivet gun to use. Is store bought good enough?
I have an el cheapo rivet gun now but wouldn't mind having something nicer.

for interior you want 1/8 inch (or 5/32 if the hole is swagged out) aluminum pop rivets with a color to match your interior. I am not sure if Home Despot has colored pop rivets. As for tools, that depends upon how many you plan to do and how strong your grip is. Tool quality shouldn't really be an issue as that is mostly a 'you get what you pay for' kind of thing. Some folks hit harbor freight for a one-shot, manual or pneumatic.

White colored aluminum rivits are available in 1/8" at Home Depot but you won't find them in the normal hardware section. They are sold in the suspended (drop) ceilng section where they stock the T-bar grid systems. The rivets are bagged (100 for under $4) for riviting the grids together. Usually you have to ask where the ceiling tiles are.

Thanks

Thanks Bryan & Murray. That answered my question perfectly. Especially the availability of white rivets at Home Depot. That is exactly what I am looking for.

Also I will start looking for a pneumatic rivet gun so that both my wife and I can use it. She wants to be able to do this kind of work as well.

Buttercup,

I have been very satisfied with the pneumatic rivet gun that I bought from Harbor Freight. Take a look at the following web page to see it.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...itemnumber=167

One note of caution about their pricing. If you find that there is a store local to you print out and take the price from the internet page with you. Sometimes the store price is not in sync with the internet one but they will honor the internet price if you show them the ad.

Now that is exactly what I mean! Not a bad price either. We do have HF in our area so I will give them a call.

Help! Weather related rivet problem!

Sorry to hijack this thread but my attempts to start a new one have failed.

Trying to find a leak in the curb side rear window of my 1984 310 MH, I found the mount for the awning stand-out pole was loose. So, I drilled out the three rivets which were holding it in, intending to reseal it and rivet it back in place with the olympic rivets in my parts box.

Big problem, the holes for the rivets I removed are much larger in diameter than my olympic rivets, in fact they are somewhat larger than the 3/16 rivets I got from the hardware store.

So, what kind/size of rivets do I need and where can I get any (on a rainy Saturday)?

I don't know how much help this will be but...

I noticed that my awning brakets were held on with large sheet metal screws. Perhaps you could use some stainless ones of a suitable size. I know that Home Depot has stainless screws in their hardware department that might very well work.
