Replacement Keys??

I have been to the Lowes and Home Depot, been to several locksmith shops and all to no avail. Has anyone had any success in getting replacement keys made for 70s era Airstreams.

Thanks for your reply.

Even large lock shops do not ordinarily stock key blanks that for the Airstreams. I bought blanks from the Airstream dealer and had them cut locally.

When I was at the Airstream Homecoming, I bought some extra blanks to put in a magnetic key box and the local hardware store in Jackson Center cut them for free.

Your manual should have the key numbers or they are also stamped on most keys. With a key manufacturer name and the number, a lock shop can order the blanks for you.

I have a 77 argosy - my local lock smith has made several sets with no problem. Maybe they are looking for airstream blanks (and don't have them) when they could use some other blank.....

Thanks all for the feedback. I will try a couple of the ACE hardwares before I go ahead and order from an Airstream dealer.

Thanks again.

I was able to get a new lock cylinder with two keys from www.oasisrv.com. I think it was about $25.

Might be a good idea anyway if you think your cylinder is worn.

The first thing I did when we got our '71 Safari home was have spare keys made, I just went down to the local "Do-It-Best" (whatever franchise that is: http://barrlumber.doitbest.com/). No problems finding a blank.

Sounds like a hardware store or key kiosk is your best bet.

Replacement Keys??

I generally have had good luck in finding the necessary key blanks for both my Argosy and Airstream at my local locksmith. When he asked me what the keys fit, I told him an RV - - his response was that he would check his mobile home key blanks, and he found the blanks almost immediately - - this is in a medium sized city with a state university (numerous mobile home parks in the area). In visiting with him, it seems that there are several mobile homes from the 1960s and 1970s that take the same key blanks as the Airstream products that era.

Hi Kady,
We just had two extra sets for the '66 Overlander made at our local locksmith. He's a full-service locksmith, not just a hardware store that makes keys too. He had the blanks and made them PDQ!
Hope you find a local shop to make some, or come to Toledo, Ohio and I'll hook you up with my guy!
Callie

I tried just about every locksmith and hardware store north of Atlanta. Last week a smith ordered the blanks, today I got 3 spares made and tonight I found that they work.

Thanks all for the info and support.

The locks in both '67 Safari's I have are made by Chessler and no-one seems to have those blanks around here.

Exclamation Any key works! DOH!

Hmmm, I won't tell you where it's parked... I can put ANY key in that fits into the lock and turn it to lock/unlock...

Can any locksmith visit the trailer and re-key the lock?
