Replacement Ideas for Ceiling Panel

I have a 1976 Argosy 22'. While removing my ceiling panel for restoration, I dented the heck out of it. I thought I would be able to get it back straight but after reinstallation, it looks like ****... I am going to replace it. Off the top of my head, I figured I could use 3 sections of FRP... Hide the seem near the Maxxair Fans. Maybe use a H Channel to clean up the seems. And use some spare pieces of aluminum behind the area where the ceiling lights attach...

If anyone has any ideas, please shoot them over. I am hoping for nothing special order. I just want to pick it up this weekend and get it installed.

Thanks!!!

Chris

Well, I decided to use some 1/8" thick FRP. I am using the backside though because I couldn't find any smooth FRP locally. I will let you all know how it goes....

I have often wondered why rvs are not made using plastic laminate[formica] Does the structure move too much? Same with fully glued FRP? Im about to remove cigar stained vinyl ceiling panels and need some thoughts Thanks

I have two ideas

#1 a sheet of quilted stainless steel..( would aluminum react with that? )

#2 a piece of luan padded with thin foam, then covered with fake leather
( maybe get an auto top guy to do a fancy job )

It might need to be a big section , so it doesn't look like a patch

Fiber Reinforced Plastic. Marlite is one example. Strictly speaking, Fiberglass is one type of FRP, but I see the term used more often for materials that use vinylester resin as opposed to the polyester resin in fiberglass.

Thanks guys. It was super easy to do. They sell it in 4' x 8' sheets. I cut mine to about 24 3/4" wide and however long I wanted the breaks to be. The I painted with XIM Primer and then regular old Latex paint. The H channels are located directly next to the FRP at HD...

Hi ... are those light fixtures original ? I'm replacing overhead fan/light fixture in my 1972 Sovereign ... RV store light fixtures are awful!! I'm looking for something a bit more tasteful and while it can't be "original" to the 1972 spec, I'd love to find something that can take LED's but is at least in keeping with the 1970's interior in some way ..

thanks!
Nick

Hey there, looking to replace our ceiling for now the 3rd time. Dented the original aluminum after removal and didn’t like the dents. Then went with a wood that sagged with moisture before finding this original post. How did you install? Glue to original aluminum?

Yeah, the reason we did it was because we dented the aluminum when removing it as well. The FRP is actually very rigid so I just cut it to a width that was maybe a half inch wider than necessary so that when you pop it in it has a slight curve to it. That was it. It's just sitting in there from the friction. Has worked perfectly ever since. Good luck!

Hey Nick, I know this answer is way long overdue but the base of the fixtures were original and we were placed at the actual diffuser from inland RV. Here is the link:

Hey thanks for the reply. So you did just glue to the dented aluminum? When you say “pop it in” what did you pop it into?
Thanks again!
