We have actually since then replaced the air mattress for two chaise lounge cushions. They make a super comfy bed when stretched out, and folded they make a great lounging seat at the end of the room in front of the window. Then with the middle bunks raise, kids can sit on the bottom and top bunks (which are low because of the end cap cabinets with the electrical panel in there) and also on the coveted lounger. We got two so that when a friend comes along we have another bed. The bunks look tight but I have now slept comfortably on the bottoms and middles and have stretched out but not slept on the top. Even my husband can turn over etc in each bunk. Oh, and there is about one and half feet or two feet by the door where kids can get up and down without stepping on the floor bunk.n it also is a good place for my husband or me to stand and tuck everyone in!

By the way, your fence is gorgeous! I love that you have full hookups there! How cool!

Continuing

After focusing on other life issues and fixing leaks, progress has started again. As usuall, things have progressed to remove a few more items and remove the carpet all the way to the door, since I'm in there already! Should remove the rest of the adheasive, repair rivits and retack some areas and be ready to paint by next week.

Bottom Wall Rails go in!

More progress.
After some more wall cleaning, I worked on getting all the seams as close together as possible. Rivets were removed that were under another layer, so one rivet would go through all layers to eliminate the gaps. Rivets that were loose or sticking out were replaced. All holes that were previously covered with tape were pluged with short rivets. Around 200 rivets were replaced or added. I removed most of the rivets in the rear top panel near the vent to find the 12V wires that will connect the rear MaxxFan going in this week.

Got the lower wall rails installed and got the upper rails marked. Lower bunks start at 13" off the floor and the upper bunks start at 47" off the floor. 13" is a great height for getting the storage tubs under the bunk.

The complex curve round the corner also curves outward, so the rails have washers between the rail and the wall on the curve to keep the rivets tight.
The top rails will be reverse angle since the wall will curve inward and washers will go below on the curve to keep the top level.

The Harbor Freight rotary laser level made the job much easier. The floor tollerance is around 1/4".

Nice progress Paul. So you removed the queen, and you are making a bunkhouse in the rear area....lots of room I suppose.

Perhaps we will see it first hand at this year's San Marcos event?

Yes, queen to 4 beds. The queen setup was a waste of space. I'll be able to fit 6 storage tubs instead of 4 under the lower bunks and almost double the outside access storage.

Wow, That is very nice! Thanks for the link... come to find out, they were in the Austin area in Janurary! That would have been great to see. I believe my installation will be just slightly less expensive then what they did, but it sure gives me tons of ideas. It's a work in progress and the lighting is still to be worked out.
Those 27FBs sure do have a bunch of glass!

Hey Paul,

Any progress on this project since you last post? I am interested in seeing the way you attached the bunks in San Marcos (If possible). We are looking at a possible bunk in our soon to be trailer.

Steve

progress...

Finally making some progress... in order...

Got the upper wall rails installed, the storage door rails installed along with the holes for the outlets in the back done.

Created the bedroom/storage area bulkhead and the storage top with the bed rail sides.

Finished the new shower and bath walls in order to mockup the lower bunks.

Created the rear trunk that will have flip up lid very soon.

The storage divider top and trunk/cabinet provide the steps to get to the upper bunks.

I'm kicking around the upper bunk support method... hang or support from below.

I found out that the dining/bath wall was not anchored as previously thought, so out it came! It will go back in anchored in the corner top and bottom.

Just need to finish the upper bunks and bathroom cabinet. Then it's sand/stain/paint time!

Hi, great work. I usually only see an older trailer being stripped down like this. Same year as mine and I only remodeled my living room. Can't wait to see more of your work.

Rear Bunks

Hi Paul,
Your project looks great ! Good job ! I recently purchased a 2004 Classic and want to convert the rear bedroom from a queen to bunks. Do you have any more pics of the bunkroom ? Also any other tips/suggestions would be really appreciated !
Thanks !
