Question Paint or original - Opinion Poll

I am going back and forth - paint the dark oak cabinets in my 1992 Excella Classic or leave original.

I have painted all the oak cabinets in my home either light cream or white (depending where) and I never regret it for one minute (actually I wonder how I stood them for the 20 years before I painted).

When I enter the camper I feel like I am in a cave. The floors are cork - mixes of browns. Dark, dark, dark......what to do?

My other half says the value of the camper is higher by having everything as 'original' as possible.

Any opinions?

Are the cabinet faces real wood or laminate?

If real wood, I'd say strip and refinish with just polyurethane, no stain. It'll get you a lighter finish without covering up the wood.

If it's laminate, paint away. It's only plastic.

I vote for this option too.

Real Wood

Yep, the cabinets are real wood - all of them and there are a ton in this 29'er!

Strip and seal... that will make it lighter in there. Painting the cabinets is strictly forbidden by the KOPs (Keep Original Police) as well as the style purists.

Original.
Or strip and stain lighter or natural finish as mentioned.

Right now I am refurbing a '60 and part of the most aggravating work is removing layers of owner applied paint from everything to try to get it back to original. Someday a future owner will be doing the same if you paint. Just food for thought.

As I work on my old Airstreams I come across many ungodly modifications previous owners had made. Many of those are unbelievable...and I always wonder..."why'd he do that?" (see my thread on that subject..) You may be on the road to having a future owner ask that of you. BUT, I am a firm believer in you making your own choices ...it is yours...go enjoy it all.

Hmm. I am probably going to paint, but my cabinetry is all laminate. If it were real wood I would probably sand & refinish.
