Post packing and organizing ideas needed

I am a total newbie with no prior RV experience. I would like ideas on how to organize and pack our 2005 Safari. I can't figure out where to put a wastebasket, and have been hanging a plastic grocery bag from the cabinet hardware.

We did that when we had a van camper, too small to have a dedicated space, now with AS I built in a shelf under sink with a basket that holds the plastic grocery type bag as they are always in excess at home. But from some news reports plastic will be phased out in Calfornia and the rest of the states will follow.

I added on of the adhesive hooks to the panel just inside the door of our '71. I do use the plastic grocery bags, but tie a knot in the "handle" so it doesn't hang so low. This worked fine......until we got a puppy. My bag now hangs from very high up.

We have a small garbage can that I put out beside the drawers in the galley. Stow it in the cabinet under the sink during travel. But we have found it to be very small and have gone to hanging kitchen bags - I think they are 13 gallon, on the cabinet hardware in the galley and another one on the cabinet door right next to the outside door.
Have found that I packed ssome things that I thought would be essential, only to find that after several trips, have yet to use.
Put in what you think that you will need and use, the determine what you actually need and want. It is a learning process as everyone has different needs and wants. But do think small, if you are going to add something (say a mixer or crockpot, etc) find a small one.
Pots and pans are on the small side, along with the camping nesting kind. Plan some trips, put in what you think you need. Then when you get back decide what you could have done without and what you missed. Also unless you will camp somewhere way out of any town, you can always go to town to get what you forgot. Enjoy

Plastic bags to be discontinued? I guess we will have some kind of tote bag. Where the sliding door connects by a magnet plate will hold a plastic handled bag...and the oven makes great storage for bread crackers and packaged soups.

Go to the Container Store with your camper, there in Edina, MN. Let the pros help you.
The Container Store > Store Locations in Minnesota > Edina
I had them look at my camper and got a few very useful items. I have there Elfa shelving in my home.

Camp in it first, make changes and additions slowly, and consider that what works for other people may not work for you.

I have a classic and for the most part find that the stock cabinetry provides most of the organization I need. It took several trips to figure out what the best use of the space was. Try it, fix it, try it, repeat.

You may find, as I do, that nylon drawstring bags favored by hikers and canoeists are helpful in some cases:

REI Ditty Bag - Package of 3 at REI.com

Or that large mesh bags work for things like shore power cords or laundry:

Amazon.com: LARGE ECONOMY MESH BAG: Sports & Outdoors

Or that pop-up hampers are helpful for cleanup:

Amazon.com: Honey-Can-Do HMP-01260 Pop-Up Mesh Spiral Hamper, Large, White: Kitchen & Dining

Finally, there are RV-specific things. I don't use ANY of them so don't get carried away but some people like them

Hi Elydiane,
I feel your pain! I've had my trailer for 2 years now, and storage is still a work in progress. Last year, I did what Sempi suggests...taking out stuff I didn't use all season. That really helped, and I didn't miss anything! I also discovered that locations for certain items just didn't work, so I switched them around. I'm still not totally satisfied...truly, I'd love the opportunity to look through people's cupboards. Not to be nosy, just to get ideas. I like the mesh bags Jammer suggests for cords. That would tidy up our one and only storage hatch. Keep the ideas coming...lots of us are looking!

Here is a photo of the large mesh bag I use to organize the shore power compartment. I put the 25'-20A, 50'-30A and 100'-20A power cords in there because they're rarely needed and it helps keep everything from getting tangled up.

Trash container is a standard size with the upper side edges cut away. This allows the container to slide in on the right side under the sink.

For the closet, a shoe holder works good.

Add a small shelf in the corner for the coffee maker. Also, if you have the fluorescent light in the galley, that blinds you when trying to look inside the upper cabinet, take about a 1" strip of duck tape and put it on the inside front area of the cover.

We keep our wastebasket and a laundry hamper in the shower. (You might find fishing poles in there too.) Easy peasy to take out when we want to use the shower, but keeps both out of our way until we want to use them. And keeps the dog from being tempted.....

I use one of the mesh laundry bags that pops out (Lowes, etc has them) and hang it on the clothes rod inside the shower with a huge (6-8 inches long) carbiner hook (also at Lowes or HD, etc). That way we can just unclip it when ready to take a shower and it doesn't get wet when we put it back in the shower because it is hanging! This also provides good ventilation to the dirty clothes and keeps the smell down!

I use a chrome can with a foot operated lid. Outside I have a larger collapseable nylon container.
