It is hard to tell by photos - but this picture was last year on the way to the Rally - from fender to top of wheel rim was 1.24" We now have 4" exactly from fender to top of rim.

Although they are new rims and tires the wheel is the same size height wise - both rubber and rim.

any pics of the actual axle install?

details! how'd it go? tips?

what's w/ the silver color of the axle? is that just a paint choice?

Hi Chuck;

The install was just great - no welding necessary - shock mounts in perfect position - the only hiccup was the holes on the one side were just a hair out - enough to stop the bolt from going through so Peter just had to get the trusty drill out and get the hole perfect. - The actual Axle mounting bracket was a perfect fit width wise as well as the frame acceptance point for the square of the axle.

Our biggest problem with the axle instal was the actual location of the trailer. Not haveing the luxery of a nice garage, or even a concrete ground to work on - Peter had to do some pretty fancy man handling to get that axle under the trailer and jack it up into place - what with the pouring rain and vicious bugs - he surely does deserve a medal of something to hang around is neck.

It had to be out of the way because we knew that she was going to be stationary for a few weeks - and we must not block our driveway for emergency access trucks.

The fancy silver colour is actually Galvanized dipped treatment. We will be travelling most of the time during the salty sandy winter roads from Ontario to the southern states each winter. This application just gives the axle a little extra protection from the elements. It was not until after we ordered it that we realized that she matches PERFECTLY with the under belly .

We also ordered all the hardware in zinc as well - SS would have been great but we have to watch our spending - with three trailers on the go right now.

We had the same application done on the Overlander - Galvanized and zinc coated hardware.

I took some pics of the plant and when I have time I will make up an album in the photo section.

Axis Products and Henry are great to deal with - neither Peter or I are into mechanics like some of you guys are - or have grown up with it - so all this stuff is pretty new and amazing. Peter will tackle any job and has all the patience in the world to get the job done right. He may not have the right tools at the right time - but he sure does get the job done...

Not sure If I am suppose to do this - but we got that little puppy cloned with the special upgrades for $370.00. The return was a 4 bolt on axle at the other end - with just a bit of burring out of two holes from the frame to the axle mount.

If we had a nice flat floor - and she was jacked up higher - the job would have been 97% perfect which is just the ticket for the DIY'er like us. No scary welding, or scary angles to deal with. No questions about shocks or no shocks - just the perfect shock mount mounted to perfection.

I had mentioned before - that if we had gone the initial route today we would only have the axle for the GT - and not the new fancy tires and wheels as well as a full set of new axles and suspension set up for the Overlander - for virtually free.


PS on the shock mount - instead of the pin being welded we have a bolt on set up - which means we can change out the shock without having to drop the axle - a huge bonus and sure makes keeping up with shock maintenance a big help.

Knocked off a few more on the list...

Gearing up for Holidays - Peter finished installing the replacement lexan.
And preped the water heater for the new plumbing. New plumbing scheduled for next week. - change out copper for pex. Got his work cut out.

In the mean time - I finished off installing all new fuzzy seals on the screens - and my Brother Dave has jumped right into the Vintage Airstream life - removing the old dried out gasket on the door and applying a fresh new gasket. On the weekend he will start on the windows.

A few little touch ups inside - like tighten all the screws and replace the rivets from the shaking and rattling from the bad axle. Now when we step in the Trailer she has a distinct bounce about her - might just rock us to sleep like being on a boat.

Quick question - does anyone know if you can remove the side windows by removing the washer clips of the lifter arms and lifting the window beyond the eyebrow apex - like the side acces doors - will it drop out of the track???

Also does anyone know where I might find the white lifter arm knobs or a suitable substitute - they just slide on and off the end of the arm - but sure do save your hands from the straight metal arms.

On another note - do you have to have a battery (at least partially charged) hooked up to the Intelli Power in order for the AC to work??? AC did work but now she does not want to - only difference is we have a shot battery that no longer holds a charge - would this make a difference when hooked up to shore power???

See for you newbies - it comes in waves- you will have hiatis and then bamb - more questions will arise in a single day than you can imagine....

Hi Don;

Well the wheels came off the 1999 Excella - We had borrowed them to bring the Overlander home and they looked so nice we just had to buy two new ones for the Globe Trotter.

It was just another added customer service that Axis did for us - When we had the Overlander in for new Axles and getting them to clone the Henschen from our GT - we asked if they could source the wheels (as Airstream uses just a slightly different style today. They are from the American Racing line of rims with the raised nipples as someone put it - and we picked them up for $88 a piece along with the Marathons at $94 each - you have no idea what we would have paid for them up here in CAN - ouch!!!

Hi Riskit - sorry missed your post - we sure are digging it and the more we go to Rallies the more people hear about our little baby and want to have a peak - she is our pride and joy at the moment.

Our other two babies (61 Overlander/ 99 Excella) are starting their transformation - but it will be a slow process with our schedule - so it looks like we will be traveling south with MoonBeam this winter - which is okay by us - with these gas prices. Just a little less on the weight side of things.

Before winter we hope to finish the gasket replacement. Rig up a new AC shroud and get a stone guard made for the front windows. Tee hee even though two are now lexan. We hope one day to find the wing window for the street side during our travels - but if anyone knows of a 69 being parted out with intact windows - would really appreciate a heads up.

Good luck with your hunting for a Caravel Don - they are a really neat size. Our layout always gets comments saying wow there seems to be a lot of room in here. Even with the dark fabric the trailer is bright and airy with lots of room for two adults and two big dogs.
