More efficient closet space

It seems we are always on that ever-elusive quest for the Holy Grail of RVing: space.

My wife and I looked at the closet and thought, ’there has to be a better way’. The PO had hung one of those canvas thingies with the compartments, but that didn’t seem to add to the efficiency at all.

Photo 1 shows how I had to modify the floor. You can’t mount the shelf standards to just that 1/8 inch thick plywood itself- there isn’t enough strength, even with the mouse fur.

Photo 2 shows a close-up of the inserts which were cut out and routed. (I’m not a good woodworker, and you wouldn’t have to get nearly as intricate as this.

Photo 3 just shows the glue set-up.

Photo 4 indicates how the floor had to be cut in two, to allow access to the water pump and other stuff. Hardware store L-brackets go into the inserts that were added below the floor.

Photo 5 is of the completed project.

And photo 7 is a detail of the baskets attached to the inside of the door.

Wow! My husband and I were just talking about doing something like this but hadn't gotten to the next step " how would we do this"? Perfect timing! We have a two door closet so may just do one side so we have some space for hanging clothes too ( not that we bring too many as we usually just wear jeans and tee shirts)

Our bottom shelf will be a little higher as that is where we put our trash can - the small one under the kitchen sink just doesnt work for us

Thanks for posting!

Hey, Karen.

You see that we left 6 inches on the left side for hanging clothes. (Room for maybe 2 coats, if it's winter, or 2 suits if we have to attend a wedding or funeral.)

The light would be blocked, but that's another story.

Bret

I didn't notice that Bret but thanks for pointing it out. That's just the amount of space we need.

Closet Space

That is a great idea! I love the organizational aspect. Be aware, though, of the weight that you put in there. We stacked several cases of water in that space once and the unequal weight distribution caused us some towing problems. We learned that you can load up that closet once you've set up camp, but not while towing.
