Interior walls

Hi everyone, I'm new to airstream ownership with a gutted 1961 Safari.

I've spent countless hours stripping many layers of paint off interior walls. When I finally got to the bottom in the front section the walls are a dark gray instead of the aluminum I was expecting. Can anyone tell me what this is? Advice?
Please help,
