Interior skin

Where can I find the interior "skin" or metal used for the interior walls? We are remodeling and I want be using the vent over the old fridge or the furnace and I would like to replace it with something similar, I don't know what to ask for at the hardware store.

Well, the interior skins of most 70's Airstream are a vinyl clad aluminum, not something you are going to find at your local hardware store. You're probably not going to find vinyl clad aluminum anywhere that matches yours unless you check out some of the RV salvage yards and get lucky.

You could find un-clad aluminum panels though at places like Aircraft Spruce. Then apply a vinyl walcovering, paint, Zolatone of your choice.

Another alternative to salvage, is to remove some skin from a concealed location and use it for patching. Then replace it with a different piece. It is my understanding that some sheets of the vinyl coated are still available from some dealers and Airstream, but it is outrageously expensive.

The original 'ivory" colored vinylcald interior aluminum, has not neen available for some time.

Airstream does however, have a light gray vinylclad available.

Is that same in my '74 Argosy too?! I haven't peeled it back yet, but I had thought for the last two weeks that it was just vinyl. Can someone set me straight 'cause I'm about to clean it off this week.

All Argosy trailers used "vinylclad" aluminum.

Thanks for the glimpse under the skin. That would explain all those rivets in there holding things in place on the interior skin (like the interior divider walls with curved channels). I thought it was the strength of multiple rivets into vinyl or that somehow they were hitting all the frame members!

This also explains the grounding rivets into the interior skin from all those 12V lights!
