I had to push mine in fairly forcefully to get the holes lined up. I had added an electrical box dead center of the end cap, and judging by how much of the box was bulging, the distance between the outside shell and the inside cap may be as little as 1 inch.

It will depend on how hard the guy was pushing who did the original installation.
