instrument trim

When I was waiting for my brake controller to be installed, I noticed a neat display at the shop: Gemico - fabricators of synthetic dash kits. A light bulb lit and I thought that I could use this to replace the (very) discolored/yellowed trim around my instrument panel. They will custom fabricate from a template. My only question - would it allow the light to shine through to show the tank levels? I'm going to research this further but thought it had some really neat potential for customizing the instrument panel.
