I need help in the bedroom!

Thought that would get your attention.

We replaced the factory queen bed in our Safari Bunk with a custom residential pillow top innerspring queen mattress. It is much heavier than the foam mattress that came from the factory and the two struts that were installed to aid in lifting the bed aren't nearly strong enough. They will barely hold the bed up to access the storage underneath. Often the bed will fall if I don't hold it up while accessing the storage...and this is where we keep the liquor! We also keep the grill under the bed. My wife can't lift the bed and I have to do it for her. Needless to say this isn't good for my already bad back.

I asked the Airstream dealer nearby to give me a quote on larger struts or a power bed lift while they were doing some warranty work on the A/C. Instead they just moved the base of the struts a couple of inches forward and charged me $100! Needless to say that was my first and last time using them for work on my Airstream.

Anyway, I thought I would either add a third strut or replace one or both of the existing struts with larger struts to make lifting the bed easier. Does anybody have a suggestion as to what size to add to the existing struts or what size to move up to if I enlarge one or both of them? Also, can I get them at the auto parts store?

Minnie's Mate,
I can't speak to the strut size, but have you considered storing the liquor somewhere where it is easier to get at? then you won't have to lift the bed.

I have children aboard.

Also, the wife has confiscated all the other storage spaces large enough for my liquor collection.

I don't want it too easy to get to, but I still want to be able to get to it myself. As it is now, if I'm not going in after the grill, I usually just say it's too much trouble to get to the tequila or rum, etc. to make a cocktail to go with dinner.

to bad you could put an air device on it. Kind of like an Airshock. or even an electric arm might be cool. push a button and the bed goes up like the stair case on the Munsters.

That's what I had in mind when I asked for a quote from the nearby Airstream dealer. He also sells all kinds of luxury class A's and figured he could install a bed lift like some of them have. Instead of giving me a quote for one of those or even a quote for stronger struts, I was presented a bill for just over $100 to move the base bracket about 2"; a charge that I did not pre-approve and the service write up clearly spelled out what I had requested. I was not amused nor was I a "happy camper". Jackson Center is aware of my dissatisfaction since they were the ones that suggested that I use this dealer.

You can buy gas struts/springs at an auto parts store, but they might not have the appropriate mounting brackets. A Google search on "gas springs" might provide more possibilities.

Hummmm, note to self, MM keeps the liquor UNDER his bed...... Must keep him sober long enough to access booze THEN let him pass out.....

The only advice - and I would guess it's not what you are looking for, is a block and pulley system. Find a rib section directly over the bed edge that is lifted and place a polished hook ar something from a marine supply that looks real nice. Have the two blocks and line tucked in under the mattress and when needed place the one block in the hook and pull the line. Every pass through the blocks reduces the weight by half.

There you go, and it will save my back in the future too.

Mike, you are welcome at the "Changes in Latitudes" bar and lounge anytime my friend. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like an occasional cocktail and enjoy sharing one with others. I usually try to keep a small variety to be able to offer something to anyone.

Note: not responsible for overindulgence, please drink responsibly.

Oh, yeah, you will be at the "End of Summer Rally Thank". Note to self...install a lock and hasp on the bed.

If I got real fancy, I could go to the Ford dealer and order a rear lift gate mechanism like my wife's Expedition has. Remote power rear door lift. It has a power hydraulic strut system. But, if it's priced like the power rear sliding window the thieves broke out on my F-250 a few months ago, I can't afford it. The rear window was over $1,200! and of course, only Ford carries it. Glad I have comprehensive insurance!

what about a bone yard. or even a spring set up like on a garage door at the hinged end. My mind really starts turning when mechanics come sinto play.
