Thinking Outside the Box

How about a garage door opener? A lever fixed at 90 degrees to the platform the box spring set rests on would allow the opener to pull the lever and raise the platform. Even the smallest should work. Bonus, you even get a remote!

Of course, if it would help, I could forward some of those generic Viagra junk mails that pop up occasionally. You could give it to your struts. Hey, you started it with the thread title.

Dang, youíre right mustang! Following that, how about a 12 volt winch attached the same way? No remote, though.

Off Topic, itís 500 for the 4th (Rivet Master status) rivet. While off topic, love the photo on your personal info. And, what Mustang is it that you enjoy drag racing?

I hardly ever lift our bed so I can't remember what the hinges look like under there, but one thought would be to replace the standard hinges with spring loaded gate or door hinges. They're easy to buy at any big box hardware store and might reduce the "lift weight" enough to allow the existing struts to do their job.

You could also go get some struts off a junk hatchback that would likely be stronger than the originals.

Does this post earn me a margarita from the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Liquor Lounge?

You could also join your local low-rider club and rig that baby up with some sweet hydraulics - get it bouncing real good and grab the liquor you want between hops!

(Discussion of possible alternative uses of the low-rider bouncing bed are probably prohibited in this forum and are probably safe only for trained professionals. Do not try this at home.)

More off topic, fourth rivet must be somewhere between 200 and 300 as I have four rivets, but am not yet a vernerable "rivet master"

Oops, sorry, Rivet Master is 5 rivets, 500 posts.

I like the low rider hydraulic seismic bed idea.

If you can find a really old 8' sat dish they used a long travel linear actuator that usually runs on 24 volts. The ones I messed with would run on 12 at a much lower speed. It seems they had about 20" of travel, that would give plenty of stroke (um, poor choice of words...) to assist lifting the bed.

The down side is Mr. Jose Quervo could be trapped in the event of an electrical failure unless you designed a quick release on one end of the strut.

FYI, the bed uses a piano hinge, I think.

Hydraulics in the bedroom...scary.

That's what I was thinking with garage door opener springs. I could just imaging hitting an expansion joint on the interstate and sending the mattress through the fantastic fan in the bedroom!

These pulley and block and tackle suggestions and I'm thinking about the bedroom scene in "9 to 5" with Jane Fonda and the garage door remote.

Hi Minnie's Mate; Gas operated assist cylinders [Gas Spring] are weight rated for particular applications. Some that are made for Marine Industry go up to 26" in length and 150 Lbs lift. Those are also very cheap at about $15.00 each plus end fitting at about $3.00. If you need more lift you can double them providing you now a bit about geometry. The spring closest to the hinge will have to be offset to accommodate the equal travel distance. If you need more help PM me. Thanks "Boatdoc"
