More off topic, fourth rivet must be somewhere between 200 and 300 as I have four rivets, but am not yet a vernerable "rivet master"

Oops, sorry, Rivet Master is 5 rivets, 500 posts.

I like the low rider hydraulic seismic bed idea.

If you can find a really old 8' sat dish they used a long travel linear actuator that usually runs on 24 volts. The ones I messed with would run on 12 at a much lower speed. It seems they had about 20" of travel, that would give plenty of stroke (um, poor choice of words...) to assist lifting the bed.

The down side is Mr. Jose Quervo could be trapped in the event of an electrical failure unless you designed a quick release on one end of the strut.

FYI, the bed uses a piano hinge, I think.

Hydraulics in the bedroom...scary.

That's what I was thinking with garage door opener springs. I could just imaging hitting an expansion joint on the interstate and sending the mattress through the fantastic fan in the bedroom!

These pulley and block and tackle suggestions and I'm thinking about the bedroom scene in "9 to 5" with Jane Fonda and the garage door remote.

Off Topic, it’s 500 for the 4th (Rivet Master status) rivet. While off topic, love the photo on your personal info. And, what Mustang is it that you enjoy drag racing?

Hi Minnie's Mate; Gas operated assist cylinders [Gas Spring] are weight rated for particular applications. Some that are made for Marine Industry go up to 26" in length and 150 Lbs lift. Those are also very cheap at about $15.00 each plus end fitting at about $3.00. If you need more lift you can double them providing you now a bit about geometry. The spring closest to the hinge will have to be offset to accommodate the equal travel distance. If you need more help PM me. Thanks "Boatdoc"

I took one of the struts off today and it was rated at 90 lbs. I called Camping World today and talked to their parts manager. They sell up to 120 lbs. lift. It's a good hour to the nearest Camping World so I went to the Autozone nearest me. I got a strut the same length, but it didn't have the rating on it or the container. The clerk looked it up in their system but couldn't find the rating in the computer. The shaft was nearly twice the diameter so I bought two and figured I could replace both existing struts and if that was too much I could use one existing and one larger one. However, I installed both in place of the two that were original.

The mattress was so heavy that even with two 90 lbs. struts, the bed wouldn't stay in the raised position with the originals. While the new ones aren't a two finger lifting operation, the bed is much easier to lift and will stay in the raised position on its own.

Not sure why the manufacturer that Autozone uses doesn't include the lift rating, but they didn't. The Lift Master that was original had the lift rating on the side.

How's the bed?
Is it a lot more comfortable than the foam matress?
We're looking at replacing ours.

My wife ordered the bed through Velo. It is a custom sized, with angled corners, inner spring, extra firm mattress with pillow top cover. It is really comfortable. It was expensive but it is as comfortable as any you will get for your home. In fact, it is not an RV mattress, but a residential model that was custom made to fit the bedroom. My wife says I snore less when we camp than when I sleep in our new Simmons pillow top extra firm mattress at home.
