We have a '62 22' Safari, and we are keeping the end caps with our renovation. We need to remove them to re-insulate and install new wiring. Before we remove them, we would like to remove the textured popcorn like finish off of them while they were still in place. We already tried sanding it, but the finish is super hard. We want to paint them as a smooth finish. We are just starting our renovation project. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove it?

Welcome to Air Forums Addiy: I think you will find a lot of information here related to your 62 Safari project.

My former 66 Trade Wind had a fiberglass end cap in the bath. It was finished smooth. I'm surprised to learn of a rough finish on the fiberglass in 62. Others will chime in and help explain. Yes, a photo well help.

Fiberglass is laid up in a mold. It would be hard to create a "popcorn" bumpy surface with this process. Usually the mold side of the fiberglass part is quite smooth, like a boat hull. Sometimes the resin is colored giving a molded in color finish. I believe my Trade Wind was made this way.

Let's see how knows more about this trailer than I do.

What grit sandpaper paper did you use? Did you use a sanding block? Orbital sander? Get through top coat?

Sanding is not necessarily easy. If the area changes color, stop and assess the moment.

i don't know if the inside finish of the trailer is original or not. i will put a picture soon. the whole trailer is finish with that very sharp pointed popcorn. orbital sander was used with 50 grade paper. in one foot square of sanding and one sand disk was gone and the surface was more smooth but still bumpy. thank you guys for your help..

No that is not original from factor. Someone add that texture. If you look where your cabinets use to be and the smooth strip on the bottom of your endcap that is original. I would use paint stripper to remove. If your not taking the interior skins out, lay some plastic sheeting on the floor and spray or paint on.
