Getting Assistance in Rehab?

Not the type of rehab you were prolly thinking right away, lol. But, hubby and I are under a time crunch to rehab and live in the 1968 30' Sovereign we bought that currently sits in PA. We are in MI and want to leave the state for rehab to rehab it somewhere warm.

We can go just about anywhere in the US. But, since I'm disabled and can only help so much, hubby will need help ripping old carpet out and updating. I'm wondering if there is anyone or lower cost places where we can buy us some knowledge and muscle power.

He needs a rehab buddy, someone to advise, and to help him do it. We have to move out of my mother's house by the end of September (thanks MOM!) and pick up the airstream. Our thoughts were to wrap up things in MI and drive to PA and then drive the AS to whatever location we could rent space to rehab it in (we could pay for electricity and utilities). We also have to pick up/sell some stuff in Chicago that we put into storage when I rushed to MI to live with and take care of my ailing mother.

I have a tempurpedic queen size mattress I'd like to put in the AS due to back issues, and the bathroom looks like it needs new flooring/toilet. Other than that, I really don't know what repairs will have to be made based on the few pics from the ebay listing. Hubby is going to help me post them later.

I'm thinking of having hubby outfit the back of his pickup truck with a tool chest, as we will need to bring his tools with us for the rehab project.

If you guys know of any place that would be a better place for us to go, or have in mind someone who would like to help us rehab for reasonable pay or barter (hubby has carpentry, electric, automotive, and computer skills), please respond. We need to have a place to live ASAP, and I would like to be in my comfy AS soon.

Thanks for reading!

Hello,

Well, from your post not exactly sure what you are looking for. Are you planning on staying on the East Coast somewhere? Do you have a specified time you need to work on it before going somewhere for work or other duties?

Are you planning on staying in the A/S while it is being worked on? If that is the case you will need access to bathrooms, showers, etc. while you work on yours.

I would suggest you scour the threads on rigs of your size and vintage to see what others have come up against... Your biggest obstacle will be safety and usability issues. Be sure the tires and brakes are in good order, as well as the propane lines, etc. Check your axles and see how they are... if they haven't been replaced they may need it! If you aren't going to drive really far then you might be okay for awhile.

Once your safety stuff is good to go, then the rest can be worked on as you can get to it. If you need to fix the bathroom floor and toilet that should be your first task after safety. You will need all the tools of the "trade", but sometimes the bigger ones you can rent.

If you are looking for a "rehab" buddy for hubby, just post that as an individual post and see who might respond! There are some very capable folks on the forum, but don't know if anyone would want to have a little side job... always worth an ask! That might help you decide where to go!

Good luck with your project, post some pics soon! We love pictures here!

I'm looking to stay somewhere warmer (like TN/KY/Carolinas) that's within a driveable distance. We have a truck to pull it (it is in good enough shape to haul) or we could have it delivered, if necessary. We don't have to be anywhere under any time constraints, just need to avoid bone-chilling cold so we can work on it. We are looking for a place to rent space for working on the AS and/or barter skills. I do want to try to live in it as soon as possible, but would be wiling to rent garage/workshop space and get a small room nearby.

My short-term plan as of now is to wrap up living in Michigan (put stuff in storage with friends, sell remainder) and then put what I want to keep and use with the AS in the truck along with hubby's tools and pick up AS or have it delivered to where we can work on it. We might buy a small utility trailer to haul the tools, but then we would be bootstrapped because if we have to haul the AS, we wouldn't be able to also haul the tools. However, we have lots of tools and I need the bed space of the truck for moving personal items too.

I will make an individual post for a rehab buddy. Just not sure what forum to put it in.

Hello again,

I am afraid I don't know anything much about that part of the country, or any folks who might be willing to help west of the Rockies... but try your post and see if you get any responses. If you look at the members list you can perhaps still see who is willing to provide courtesy parking so if you need a spot for a day or two you can contact them, and those kinds of "locals" might know someone! The members list also used to show (haven't looked in awhile) who would do courtesy inspections, so you might find someone who would at least come by and help you make an assessment.

Just some other off the top of my head ideas... Good luck!

Well, some members might be out camping .... I know there are times I don't log on for a week or so.... you might try another if one is around! Lots and lots of members, not quite so many really active forum posters.

Goobygirl,

Be sure and post as many pictures as you can! Ask oodles of questions here on the forums and you will get most of the help you need! When we bought our Bambi we knew nothing about Airstreams other than I wanted a Bambi! We bought ours off ebay and it needed a total restoration... but hubby went at it and posted oodles of questions and what do you do if... coupled with lots of pictures. Got great advice and how-to's! Even if you don't find anyone right away, you will get help! Great folks here.

Just for your "reading pleasure" you can check out my hubby's thread on our bambi and the restoration process. It took him about 9 months for a total frame off restoration. Doesn't sound like you will have to go that far. Here is his thread, many pages...lots of how-to's etc. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f36/...mbi-17925.html

If you are planning on doing this before winter sets in, I suggest you look for threads on fixing leaks and be prepared with materials you might need. Leaks happen.
