Eyebrow cabinet

The 70's eyebrow cabinet has never suited me. The tambour doors didn't work well, the cabinet was poorly divided, and it didn't work very well as an entertainment center. This is my third attempt (the other two were in other Airstreams) and has some new features I really like.

First step is take out the old control center and eyebrow cabinet. The wiring is a bit of a mess.

At 25 lbs, the new cabinet is about 3 times as heavy as the old metal one. The fiberglass dome can probably support it, but just to be safe I added some brackets to the inside of the shell. On the outside all that is visible is a row of 6 rivets above the "Airstream" name.

The bracket provides a convenient place to terminate all the speaker and tank monitor wiring. The three terminal strips are for (1) tank monitor, (2) temperature measurements (outside, inside, fridge, fridge boiler, fridge chimney), and 12V power/ground. There is enough room remaining to add a 5V regulated supply for Sirius/XM.

At this point, all the wires are in place and the monitor panel and the eyebrow cabinet can both be removed by simply unplugging the connections. You can't see the radio/speaker connections (all wired to car radio plug), which are lying on the bottom of the fiberglass shroud.

The cabinet is a tight fight, and has the same 6 degree slope front and back. The drawers also have this slope, so they fit snug in their places. The drawers are held in place by magnets on their bottoms which match magnets in the shelves. The face of the Kleenex holder is also held in place by magnets, but they are at the sides and are 90 degrees to the face (space was limited). The last step will be making two doors for the shelf areas.

Very nice. What are you going to put in the hole above it?

All done, except there is some room in the old controller panel area for other items, TBD. All the old stuff has been replaced with the digital controller -- amps, volts, tank levels, and outside temperature (no barometer, but that is a simple digital chip these days, so easy to add in). In addition to the original display, I added inside, fridge, burner, and fridge chimney temperatures.
